I was an 11B that worked his way up from amo bearer to senior gunner on the M224. Back in my days we had no 11C until shortly before I left.
I initially trained with the old brass 60mm the they came up with the M224.

Dude jumping a ruck packed for an 11C is something else. Then add to that the M224 anyway it's an experience! 8)

Good luck in your attempt at getting to Batt.

Yeah, I bet jumping with all 11C equipment is a pain on the knees and pretty much every other part of the body. What do 11C's do after they jump or on a ftx? Setup their mortars, shoot, then hang with the bravo's? I'm curious

I spent almost 8 years in 2/75 as an 11C, while I'll admit that it's a thankless job, it's also a neccessary one, which few are ever willing to fill. I don't want to go blabbing in the public about what happens, etc. But make damn sure you know your stuff, nomenclatures, ballistic data, FDC procedures, or you'll be way behind the power curve.

You need to get to Ranger School, there's no way they're taking an 11C NCO without a tab.

Yeah, I know I need to go to Ranger School. But my unit doesnt want to send me. I've been trying for 3.5 years now and also trying to take care of it on my own, but those guys are damn douchebags. I'm going to give it hell again when I get out of WLC

Hey man, you can go to RIP without a tab, but I highly recommend getting your shit first. The last 3 E5 11B type that came through RIP have quit either in our Pre-ranger (which you would have to do) or in RS. While RIP itself is not that bad, reporting to Pre Ranger 2 days after graduating RIP, sucks. Not saying that you can't do it, but getting your tab is what it is all about and if you can get it before you try and focus on modern day rangering, it would be alot better.

vossman wrote:Stay 11C! Any 11B can do a hollywood jump, but it takes a big SACK to jump with the baseplate. (14.4 lbs, how's that for memory?). There's nothing llike hearing the "tink" of that hunk of aluminum hitting the airfield seconds before your skull cracks the very same tarmac.
My best of friends came from being in weapons platoon and I wouldn't change it if I had a choice.
And if you want to prepare for life as an 11Chuck, take a chunk of metal that weighs 20 lbs and put it on the ruck as far back as you can get it and go hump through South Rainer. Then finish up by running up Noble Hill. The STEEP side. You'll know which one I am talking about.
Welcome and good luck.

You know who are the ones that never get to jump hollywood? RTO's. This is dated, but when everyone was wearing nothing but an SOT vest, there I was with a ruck full of radio. Not that the SOT vest was an everyday item, but the times they were used usually corresponded with mission rehearsals that doubled the pleasure.

I buddy of mine (Watson) that I went through RIP with was a mortar maggot. We jumped into Puerto Rico (Roosevelt Roads airfield) and he managed to do a somersault out the door, or something. He wasn't sure if his leg got caught in the risers or static line or what, but his chute opened and he snapped his femur just as clean as if it was sawed in half. I've heard of F'd up stuff, and a lot of bones being broken on impact, but landing with a snapped femur, damn! Oh yeah by the way, he had a base-plate attached to his ruck.

By the way, if you're going to do Noble Hill, buddy-carry up and down the steep side. You'll need stout undercarriage, as the Brits would say. My thighs are still burning 18 years later.

One thing is for sure and that is that we humped, climbed and ran as far as the 11B. In the end we all become the same. After the PLF we are ground pounders with a heavy load.

I'am SSG (deleted by Admin - persec violation) from 2/75

Dude;
I am the PSG for the 2/75 mortar platoon. Any questions that you have you can email me at (PERSEC VIOLATION DELETED BY ADMIN) or call my office @ ********. If you contact me I can get you in contact with our retention guy SFC High and he can help you out.
To answer your question on what is exspected. You have to be highly motivated and very flexable. We operate under the armsroom concept meaning that my PLT covers all the indirect fires for the entire PLT. This includes 60mm, 81mm, 120mm. One thing I do ask is that you go to Ranger school and get your tab if you dont have it yet. If not I can send you to school after RIP.
