Introduction - rpmcmurphy

Post by rpmcmurphy »

Hello Rangers,

I've been lurking on this forum for years, gleaning copious amounts of very helpful information, but just registered a few weeks ago, and felt it was time to introduce myself.

My name is Sam and I recently turned twenty years old. I graduated from Anne Arundel Community College in December 2011 with an associate degree in liberal arts. Furthermore, I anticipate graduating from University of Maryland, University College in May 2014 with a bachelor's degree in global business and public policy.

Additionally, I currently work as a full-time "financial sales consultant" (read: banker) for a large regional financial institution.

As for hobbies, I used to play a lot of soccer when I was in high school, but haven't in a long time. I also used to play more than my fair share of video games, but like soccer, I haven't really had much time for that either. Probably for the better anyway.

I did start rock climbing indoors several months ago and have been really enjoying it; I'm hoping to find time to take classes for outdoor climbing this coming spring. I also started boxing lessons last week and that's been a blast too. I don't know if either of those activities will be a boon to my future military career, but assuming I avoid any serious injuries, I can't imagine they'll hurt. Plus, the stress relief has been great.

And now that you've made it through that short novel of a biography...

I enlisted in the Army a little over a month ago with an 11X contract. I wanted the option 40. In fact, I had it reserved both the first and second time I went to MEPS. And I fully intend to get it added back. But I'll save the details for another post in a more appropriate section of the board.

Now, I realize it is customary for DEPs here to share in their introduction why they want to be a Ranger, or simply why they want to join the Army. And I'm getting used to being asked the latter question every time someone finds out that I'm going into the military.

With that said, I could easily double the length of this already long-winded post with lofty prose about "being all I can be," sentimental words about wanting to be someone my younger siblings can look up to, or my deep admiration for those who have come before me, like the 2nd Battalion Rangers who assaulted and held Pointe du Hoc or Medal of Honor recipient Ranger Leroy Petry or any number of other heroes, and it would all be true. But I won't.

Instead, I'll just say that I was born for this shit, and I'm looking forward to proving it.

I appreciate the resources provided here and am looking forward to being part of this site. Thank you, Rangers.

Sincerely,

rpmcmurphy

wazzle,

Thank you for your kind words. I can say that writing has always been one of my strengths. I still vividly remember the disappointment on my English professor's face when I told her I had decided to pursue a business-related degree. She had been pushing me toward creative writing, and I now regret not listening to her. But, that's what the GI Bill is for.

Ranger Jim,

I appreciate your welcome and introduction to pertinent features of the site. It looks like we live in the same area. My ship date is 20140812; I should have mentioned that in my first post. I am thankful to have almost eight months to prepare, but I'm sure that time will go by faster than I expect.

Also, is it safe to assume I will be going through OSUT with Vantage, given that our ship dates are a mere week apart?

I will perform a PT test and post the results tomorrow morning.

Arrival at the reception center is luck of the draw. Usually, the enlistees are assigned to units as they arrive. As a unit is filled to its quota, the next unit is preparing to fill and getting their facility ready. We have had times when two or more of our mentees are in the same unit; but it is uncommon. Never, never quit!

Roger, Ranger Jim. The information is appreciated.

Thank you, Bronco and Ranger CharlieRanger1FFV.

Results of self-administered PT test on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at approximately 0830 are as follows:

Push-Ups - 50
Sit-Ups - 54
Two-Mile Run - 14:13

I am aware these are below Ranger standards and need improvement. During previous PT tests conducted at my recruiting station, the recruiter grading the tests told me that I had good form, so that was encouraging.

OK, so you have established a PT baseline to build on. Please add pull-ups to your workout -- your goal is at least ten. Never, never quit!
