Folks will get used to corruption and the state running everything, and it will soon be the "norm". Since education has been taken over by the government, most folks won't even know about the republic there was before the time of a totalitarian government. Nations that were once considered easily defeated, barbarians or not worth our time, will soon take heart at our weakness and become the most pressing concern. The people, no longer caring about the corrupt government, will let it do whatever it wants, as long as they get entertainment for the masses. It will be more important to know what is going on in the arena, than what is going on in the halls of the Senate.

In the end gangs of foreigners, that would have been laughed at by the military at another time, will sack all the cities. When the republic falls the dark ages will consume the known world for almost a thousand years.

Oh wait, that was Rome.
