It's amazing what they do to honor veterans in this small town.
People come from all over the country to see the flags.
Burial flags are used. Around 1400 are put up all around and through the cemetery.
Veterans who have passed are honored and represented by the flags. One flag per veteran. Veterans dating all the way back to the Spanish American war are honored. Every military conflict is represented.
My Father in Law's flag was interned into the Court of Honor last year. The Court of Honor is who cares for and puts the flags up every year. I have been involved with putting them up and taking them down these last two years.
Each flag gets clasped to a pole around 20 ft in length. It takes a couple of hours to put them all up and a couple more to remove them. This is accomplished by all of the volunteers from within the community. The whole endeavor is a site to behold.
Each year, there is a ceremony to induct the flags of any vet's from Red Oak that have/had passed since the previous Memorial day.
I can't express properly what an honor it was to handle and hang all of those hero's flags.
The cemetery is approx. a half mile square. The flags are about 15-20 feet apart from each other.
These pics do not do it justice. It's fucking amazing. ANYONE would/will be brought to tears walking among them.
This is such a big deal in this part of the country that the Air Force did a fly over just for this event.
Ill have the pics posted in a minute.
