I saw it mentioned in another thread about parachute failures. This was posted by a "new guy" in Frap thread I believe. Well, here's proof that parachutes don't always do what you want them to.

That one coming out of the back of the plane on the runway reminds me of some of the shit we pulled in 80 and 81. Didn't work then either. Although they got a runaway. That's probably the fastest that piece of shit has ever rolled in it's life. We got flips and rolls.

I think it was 1987, at a CAPEX during ROTC Advanced Camp, a C-130 was LAPESing a M551 Sheridan on the improved clay airstrip on Sicily DZ at Ft. Bragg in front of an audience.
If I recall correctly, the Herc was in a nose-down attitude when the drogue popped, and the Sheridan was supposed to come out, but instead rolled forward on its pallet, shifting the center of gravity for the aircraft. The Herc belly-flopped on the runway, its main spar broke, and it skidded down the runway until it hit a Humvee with a couple of 82nd guys in it.
Everyone onboard the aircraft died, as did the 2 guys in the Humvee.
I was off base doing on a "canoe trip" (3 days down the Yadkin River) that one of the senior NCO's got approved as "Wilderness/Whitewater Survival" or something along those lines. We got back to Bragg on the same day this happened.
I think the official cause of the accident was pilot error or loadmaster released the load. Maybe one of the division guys here remembers that.
