NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A proposal that would create an offense for falsely wearing military decorations has passed the Senate.

The measure sponsored by Jackson Democratic Sen. Lowe Finney was unanimously approved Monday evening.

The proposal would make it a misdemeanor to "wear or display any decoration or medal authorized by Congress for the armed forces of the United States ... with the intent to deceive or misrepresent to another."

The companion bill is scheduled for a vote in the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.

Its a shame its only proposed to be a misdemeanor and not a felony.

A state misdemeanor, right?

Wearing unearned badges and awards is already a felony under federal law.

Agree, but it is difficult to get prosecution by the federal authorities. Maybe local officials would take a tougher stand.

Correct. Federal authorities all to often cannot be bothered, and this is disturbing as hell to me.

Nothing wrong with hitting a poser with both federal and state sanctions.
