At least 12 dead in upstate New York shootings

Post by allmylife »

At least one gunman began shooting Friday in an immigration services building in Binghamton, New York, killing at least 12 people, Gov. David Paterson said.

A gunman is among the dead, law enforcement officials said.

A law enforcement source said more than a dozen were wounded.

Roger that Ranger K.Ingraham

As many as 14 people have been shot dead in a murderous three-minute shooting rampage inside an upstate New York civic association building that caters to immigrants, according to federal and state authorities.

The gunman was identified by some police sources as Jiverly Voong, who officials said recently lost his job at IBM.

Officials said Voong entered the civic association armed with two pistols -- a 9 mm and a .45 caliber handgun. A satchel around the gunman's neck carried high capacity magazines, a survival knife and a flashlight, according to police.

Ranger K.Ingraham, Your comment reminded me of an article I just read:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009 ... 35628.htm?

From the article, "Criminologist Jack Levin - of Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts - says there appears to be a link between the failing US economy and rising body count."

"A mass killer is someone who has almost always suffered a catastrophic loss - that's the link between a recession and mass killings," he said.

"Catastrophic losses serve as inspiration or precipitant."

As discussed in the article; late Friday, early Saturday here in the area I live about 15 miles south of Tacoma a father killed his five children and then himself after learning his wife was leaving him for another man.

So much hate, I know emotions run high in a domestic dispute been through a rough divorce myself a few years back thank God no children involved would have made it much harder...but God to kill his own children, I just don't understand it. I don't know that I ever would!

Prayers out for these five little ones and everyone else affected. Jenny

It will be interesting how they will twist it to the gun laws. Remember NYS has very strict handgun laws... you almost have to sacrafice an elder son to get one. In my county the judge will not issue a carry license to anyone unless the are an LEO or CO. It is up to the issuing officers discretion on the type of handgun permit his issues.

Rangers we could go on all day just talking about gun laws.
Of course im still one of those pissed off 19 year olds that wonders why i can shoot a m16 but not own a handgun...
Im just hoping that police first responders get more training for cases like this when they have to go face down a gunman before swat or other units arrive.
I know he took his own life but it could have been worse if he did not.

That's what the local media has been saying since the weekend.
In today's news conference hardly all the "reporters" would ask of the police chief was for comments concerning gun laws.
The Chief wisely blew them off but the shooomer barely could.
SenatorSchumer ("SS") was there and at one point jumped to the podium to ensure everyone knew that some law or other was "his" doing. Sickening.

The local fishwrap has been all about "when are they going to do someting about guns??!!"
Never mind that this bozo should have had his permit yanked years ago - but why bother enforcing existing laws when you can go write new ones?

Pretty much my point. I was at a local Houston business forum and Sheila Jackson Lee was the "honored guest". What a fucking TWIT. She spoke for 10 minutes on gun laws and how she would support the legislation to ban them. She made a comment about how many deaths were caused by GUNS. A very intelligent man in the audience, handsome fucker too, asked....you have blamed the deaths of people on guns yet made no mention of the evil cars on our highways driven by drunks.....are we to assume you support outlawing cars as well since they killed 2900% percent MORE people than guns?

The incredibly intelligent and handsome citizen was not answered. Hummmmmmm

The shooter in upstate was a Vietnamese Immigrant. Do any of you old timers remember seeing him in the Nam? Sad to say, but the guy had a plan and stuck to it. It isn't about Gun Control, some people out there are just Bat Shit Crazy, and has nothing to do with the current economic situation. Look at the guy a couple years ago at Virginia Tech, economy was kicking back then.

well played sir, well played.

I'm actually pretty impressed with WA's gun laws. it's an open carry state. Concealed permits are "shall issue", meaning if they can't find cause (legal history), they shall issue the permit, within 60 days I think.

not that anyone here knows or understands the laws, to include some cops. ie: one of my guys was open carrying and a cop suggested he go put it in his car. buddy replied I'm open carrying because I don't have my permit on me. placing the weapon ina the car is considered by law to be concealed. that would be illegal. your recommendation for me to conduct an illegal act is an illegal act on your part. ignorance or a possible set up on the cop's part is up for debate.

he had another talk to some cops while open carrying. they tried to discourage him (possibly intimidate, I wasn't there), and he quoted the law back to them and they dropped it.
