A man shot and killed seven patients and a nurse at a Carthage, North Carolina, nursing home Sunday before being wounded during a shootout with a police officer, authorities said.
Relatives of the nursing home's patients gathered at a nearby church, where they learned details of the shooting.
Three other people, including the police officer and a visitor to the nursing home, were wounded in the attack, Carthage Police Chief Chris McKenzie said. The police officer was treated and released, McKenzie said.
The slain patients ranged in age from 78 to 98, Moore County District Attorney Maureen Krueger said. The man accused of carrying out the attack, 45-year-old Robert Stewart, was in custody, and his condition was unknown Sunday night, McKenzie said.

Re: Eight killed in North Carolina nursing home rampage
This is right down the road from me, about 15 minutes away. Its pretty amazing, since the whole town is about the size of my High School that I teach in. Actually my High School is bigger (Carthage is about 1,400 people).
We still don't know why he did it. The cops are keeping any motives secret right now, while they investigate. Supposedly he didn't know anyone at the nursing home. Why hit it then? The guy was shot, but ain't dead, so we should know something eventually.
I wonder if all the hyped up paranoia on TV starts this shit up. When Clinton was president there was a hell of a lot of shootings too. So many that it eventually led the Congress to push for the assault rifle ban.
Who the fuck knows what goes through the POS's mind?

It really shows a lot about what he is made of because he wanted to hit soft targets...
