As oceanfront homeowners in Harvey Cedars and Long Beach Township anxiously await sand to widen their beaches through a multimillion-dollar replenishment project, they also fear more military munitions could be pumped ashore.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to use the same dredge site to pump in sand that littered Surf City beaches with World
War I-era military munitions.
Bob Irvine owns an oceanfront home in the Brant Beach section of Long Beach Township. He signed his easement Friday, but said he has concerns about the proposed dredge site.
"Hopefully they'll use the right screens, but they should really be looking for another borrow site," he said.
