Enlisted v.s. Officer in Batt.

Post by beckj »

Rangers,

I have been lurking and learning at this site for some time now, and I am now trying to seriously plot out my path in the Army. I am a college grad, and am employed at a grocery store, which sucks. This is helping me to seriously focus on what I am going to be doing at some point the next nine months (girlfriend is still in school and I am basically waiting for her to graduate so we can be "closer" during training).

My my real problem is sorting through the bullshit and deciding wither to take the 11a or 11b route. To me they are different paths to the same designation, the Ranger Regiment. Any one with some advice on this would be welcome.

Thanks,

Drew

You can contract into the Regiment as an enlisted man.

As an officer there is never any garentees....you might not ever get the chance.

The CSM is correct. Please allow me to make a recommendation: enlist for Option 40, serve a couple years in the 75th Ranger Regiment and if you enjoy the Army, go to Officer Candidate School (OCS). It worked for me.

I would recommend the same thing. This is the best way to get to the 75th and also the best way to become a quality officer, especially in your circumstances.

You can NOT beat the answers given. My onlly question is are you sure you want to do this?

Little advice, people focused on shit like this are the ones who usually don't make it to the objective. If she's the woman for you, she will be waiting patiently for you to get your shit, and then be standing tall by your side as a Ranger Girlfriend/Wife.

The above is solid counsel. If you enlist for OCS and get branched Infantry you will more than likely have the opportunity to attend Ranger School. However, your chances of ever serving in the 75th Ranger Regiment will be slim, very slim. By enlisting with an Option 40 contract, you will have the opportunity to attend RIP and if you make it, serve in the Regiment. If you go to OCS after a few years, your odds of being able to serve as an officer in the Regiment will be somewhat better, and in any case, you will have had the good fortune to serve as a Ranger in the Regiment, which will be a huge plus whether you make a career of the Army or not. The question really comes down to do you want to serve as an officer or as a Ranger?

That my friend, is exactly what I was going to tell him.

Listen to hit_it. Very true statement.

Also, the advice given by the other Rangers on the site are very sound. Neither is guaranteed, but you have a better shot at getting into the Regiment from the enlisted side of the house. My best Platoon Leaders were former Bat boys who went to the Officer side of the house.

There has never been and never WILL be a Lieutenant who could make me do pushups however, a great many Lt's would have and did crack concrete with a mere..."knock em out' from a revered CSM.

You have excellent guidance here, young man. Now, figure out whats important to you and do it. If it's being a Ranger or it's your girlfriend. Might even be both. 8)
