R/C Helicopters
Is anyone on the board here flying R/C Helicopters?
I have been into the hobby now for about 6 months give or take. Totally, without regret... ADDICTED now.
Building an ESky ESMART 600 now... 600 sized Electric Heli, to join my growing fleet.
Blade CX2
Esky Honeybee FP
Esky KingV2
Esky ESmart 600
Fun, fun fun!!!
Just curious if there were any other fliers on the board here.

Well, I started off with a little Wal Mart Havoc. Then I bought that Blade CX2... it's a coaxial heli, great for inside.
I got the Realflight G4 simulator, and started learning to fly on the computer. Then, the honeybee FP... that bird taught me orientation, and hovering tail in, side in, and finally nose in, as well as forward flight.
I then caught the modding bug, and turned it into a brushless, belt driven, HH gyro beast, and have a blast with it.
My first CP heli was the king. It's about the same size as the FP, but really twitchy. I learned basic loops and rolls with it.
Now, the ESmart is a 600 class heli... fucking HUGE!!!
It will be pretty stable with light wind down here. I am gonna mount a camera on this one... and have fun.
I can hover my King2 inverted, and fly loops and rolls with it.
The key is the Tx. I have a Specktrum DX6i that I use to control all of my helis....
Fun FUN FUN!!!!

Alan Szabo is one of the best fliers I know. I've seen him fly a dozen or so times.
This clip is taken only a few miles from my home, that is Sunrise Mt. in the background. 4,000+ft. and a bitch to climb!

Ranger GSXR, you may want to check this website out. While I was in a Critical Care transport class for my paramedic license, I met one of the guys that helped build this chair. Basically its an old steel school chair that was modified to be a cockpit seat for a helicopter. Some of the videos on there are awesome, and there is even one where a guy who becomes proficient on the chair get into a real helicopter for the first ever time and is able to hover with no problems, something that is apparently very difficult to do. Anyways, the site is http://www.heli-chair.com/
Yup. He's a regular out here in 'Vegas.GSXRanger wrote:yeah, I know who Alan is... he's pretty good. Have you seen Justin Chi? Been flying 3D since he was three years old. Sponsored by JR now, or is it Futaba?
Hell, I don't know.
The dudes in like kindergarden or first grade and is I think a a nationally ranked flyer.
He's one of the reasons I don't fly...
You know, that's pretty cool there. Now, if they could simulate the hydrolics and stuff... the way a real heli feels, it would be worth looking at. However, not being able to sit in the cockpit and get the sensation of actually flying... well, I will stick to my transmitter. Another thing that this chair does not simulate that a "real" heli has, is the throttle. On a model, you have a throttle curve that you program into the transmitter. Or, you go into "Idle Up" which sends the rotor speed to MAX rpm... that allows you to do aerobatics and not have the rotor speed stall on you.Thursday wrote:Ranger GSXR, you may want to check this website out. Well, I have pulled enough "g's" on my King, to have the motor bog down on it... and it's a 3800Kv brushless...
It has really helped me understand the physics behind how a heli really flies.

the aerodynamic principles of helicopter flight are simple. it's PFM.GSXRanger wrote:

ok, listen here... not all of us get paid by the Army to learn to fly... Some of us have to do it the hard way...KW Driver wrote:the aerodynamic principles of helicopter flight are simple. it's PFM.GSXRanger wrote:

it's a volunteer Army... that's all I'm saying.
PFM: Pure Fucking Magic.
here's the down and dirty:
left hand stick goes up and you go up or faster. it goes down and you go down or slower, eventually to crash if you don't pull up some at the bottom.
right hand stick goes left, helicopter goes left, stick goes right, bird goes right. stick goes forward, houses get bigger. stick comes back, houses get smaller. keep pulling it back, houses get smaller then get bigger.
it's pretty simple really.
you have some posting to do in the Mojo...

well, I did leave out the part about the pedals. they make the tail go left or right. and ya gotta put gas in it.
oh, and ya gotta look good in flight suit. Crash has a picture of what a real pilot looks like.
but here's the kicker. they made up a bunch of rules to remember so it feels like work. if there weren't so many rules, it wouldn't be as fun as it should be.
