Reintroduction (Columbus)

Post by Columbus »

Hello Rangers and everyone else on the forum.

I first registered on this site a few months ago and posted an intro at the time. However, due to my ignorance and still questioning myself at the time it didn't go over too well. Well, it's been a little over two months and in that time I've done a lot of thinking. I've come to the decision that I want to serve my country and I wish to do this by joining the Army Rangers. I'm sure in this decision.

In that time I've done a lot of PT although I still have a long way to go. I'm getting there, and have another year or so before I have to worry about BCT or anything. I've been folliwng the PT program in the Physical Training section that I believe was posted by Ranger Silverback. It's helped me a lot.

For those who don't remember me, I'll give you a brief introduction. I'm 17 years old, going into my Senior year of high school, and live in Columbus, Ohio. Although there's nothing wrong with going into the military as a career this is not my intention. As of now, I plan on being in for five years and then hopefully getting a job in local law enforcement.

My reason for posting a reintroduction is that through an odd sequence of events I ended up meeting with an Army recruiter for the first time today. After going over my basic information such as my background, physical characteristics, etc., he said I would meet the basic requirements to qualify for an Option 40. I took a practice ASVAB and scored a 90, although I'm not sure how accurate a representation of the actual ASVAB that is.

I am scheduled to take the actual ASVAB on Monday and am thinking about going ahead and enlisting early. It seems to me there would be a good deal of benefits in doing so early so it's something I'm definitely thinking about. If I do, I hope I'll be able to get a mentor on this site.

Anyway, sorry for the long post Rangers. I know I came off as an idiot last time and wanted to give you a better idea of who I am, as well as see if there was any advice any of you wanted to give to me concerning the DEP, enlisting early, that sort of thing.

Thanks for your time Rangers and stay safe,

Columbus

Do not enlist for anything until you get a chance to run your stuff by us. Unfortunately young guys like yourself sometimes don't get what they are promised and if you are serious about becoming a Ranger, then you should be afforded the opportunity to pursue your goal.

Enlisting early, from my understanding, does not really give you any kind of advantage. When you are ready, get your Option 40 contract for either 11X, 13F or 68W and then get sworn in.

We are here to assist you, but be sure to follow board SOP and address members respectfully. You have obviously screwed up in the past, so do not repeat your mistakes here or ever after.

Welcome to ArmyRanger.com!

Thanks for the response Ranger Nomad. Anything specific you want me to run by you guys I will, not sure exactly what parts you want to know. I'm assuming you mean my contract, and in that case I will definitely tell you when I get it.

I can DEP without actually enlisting right? Is it possible to still go to MEPS this summer and if everything is straight with my contract, then enlist?

Thanks for the help, you guys know a hell of a lot more about the process than me.

Send a PM to "hit_it" if you cannot find an answer to this question on the board.

1. You are correct that you got off to a weak start. Hopefully you have matured.

2. I'd like to know two things:
a. What are the results of your most recent APFT?
b. Have you learned to swim?

Thank you for the second chance Ranger Jim.

It has been a while since the last time I conducted an actual APFT in the correct format. I will do so tomorrow and report back with the results.

I'm ashamed to say that I have not yet learned to swim. However, I will be heading to the pool Tuesday and every day thereafter until I do learn. The weather is fine now so there are no more excuses on my part, time to get it done.

Again, I will report back tomorrow after my ASVAB with my PAFT results as well as my ASVAB results if I get them right away.

Sorry for the delay Rangers, I just got home.

My self administered APFT from today:

Push-Ups: 71
Sit-Ups: 63
2-Mile Run: 16:26
Chin-Ups: 14

I think that makes my score a 228 overall, so I still have a lot of work to do.

Also, I went to MEPS today and took my ASVAB. My overall score was a 90, my GT score was a 127, and my CO was a 117. I only bring up the CO because I remember it being mentioned once, not sure if it matters for Rangers or not. Again, the swimming will being tomorrow and daily training.

Thanks for all the help Rangers.

OK, so now we see you need to continue to work out and put some effort into your running. What I said about being able to swim is important. You don't have to be an olympic contender -- you just need to know how to drown-proof yourself and swim with your field uniform to include boots.

Hello Rangers and everyone else. Quick question, hope you don't mind.

I have officially secured my 11X contract (went to MEPS yesterday), however I do not have Airborne or an Option 40 yet. I do understand that I will need to get those included and what I need to do for this to happen. However, I was wondering if I can gain access to Minor Mayhem and request a mentor despite not having my Option 40 yet or if I'll have to wait.

If not then that's fine, I'll just have to wait until this fall. Just am not sure since I'm a DEP for Infantry now at least. Regardless of if I can now or not, could you tell me who I can contact in PM's for access as opposed to posting another reply in this thread? Not sure how you want it done Rangers.

Thanks,

Thanks for the response Ranger JLTW!!!. My understanding is that as long as I'm a DEP I can add anything to my contract before I ship. I don't ship for another year. The Army counselor at MEPS told me the Airborne slots won't open back up until this October and he seemed like a pretty honest, straight-forward guy. He told me I'll have to remind my recruiter to have me back at MEPS for an hour or so this fall so the issue can be taken care of.

If they don't give me the contract I want I plan on exercising my right to drop from the DEP and restart the process with a different recruiter who will give me an Option 40.

My understanding at least, if anyone knows for a fact any of that information to be incorrect please advise me.

Have you fixed your contract issue yet? You need to get that squared away soon, like now.

Also, Admins, can we get his title upgraded to DEP?
