Introduction

Hey Guys,

My name is Bion, I'm currently a freshman in Biological Sciences at Clemson university. Not sure what my plan is after college; I'm keeping my options open and plan to do careful research into Rangers, Green Berets, and SEALS before I make a decision on where I'll go. One thing I'm pretty sure of, however, is that I will probably enlist rather than applying for OCS, because the job of an NCO seems far more interesting to me. PT-wise, I can currently do a good bit better than a 300 on the APFT.

I did have a few questions, but I'm not sure about the procedure for asking, so I suppose I'll put them here (I made sure to search beforehand):

1) Would enlisting with a BS get you from RIP to Ranger School at a quicker pace? What is the average interval between joining the regiment and heading to the school?

2) To what degree do you guys customize your gear? Does the money for this come out-of-pocket?

One of the first things you are tested on in NCO Primary Leadership Development is your ability to reference material.

If you make it to and through RIP, you will be given the opportunity to attend Ranger School when your leadership feels you are worthy and the mission requirements allow it. It could be a few months to a year.

Ranger Bill,

Could I ask your personal opinion about enlisting with a degree vs OCS? My main concern is that an officer might be stuck "in the rear with the gear," which is not at all how I want to serve.

And you beat out your brothers in your squad in some healthy competition. At least in my case, we had a bunch of us come in at the same time so there was a bunch of new guys competing for those slots. But still like Ranger Bill said you will only be even afforded the opportunity when your leadership feels you are worthy and ready.

PT-type competitions, you mean? Or performance in exercises?

Read the ROE PM I am sending you. Then spend some time looking at past Introduction threads in this forum. Get a feel for how this site operates. Pay particular attention to the ones that are more than two pages long.

For a short answer to your question, if you go to OCS and are able get Infantry as a branch you will probably go to Ranger School, but very few offiers ever get to serve in a Ranger unit. If you truly want to serve in the Ranger Regiment, and want that more than being an officer, enlistment with an Option is the only guaranteed way to get the opportunity. I am certain you will get additional comments on this matter from other Rangers.
