A 10-year-old Florida girl faces felony weapons charges after bringing a small steak knife to school to cut up her lunch, according to a report on WFTV.com.

School officials say the Ocala 5th grader had brought a piece of steak for her lunch, and had brought a steak knife. According to the report, a couple of teachers took the utensil and called authorities, who arrested the girl and took her to the countyâ€™s juvenile assessment center.

"She did not use it inappropriately. She did not threaten anyone with it. She didn't pull it out and brandish it. Nothing of that nature," explained Marion County School Spokesman Kevin Christian, who added that it made no difference what the knife was being used for, they had no choice but to call police.

"Anytime there's a weapon on campus, yes, we have to report it and we aggressively report it because we don't want to take any chances, regardless," Christian said.

The girl now faces a felony charge for possessing a weapon on school property and has been suspended from school for 10 days. The parents of the girl could not be reached for comment, WFTV.com reported.

I heard this story on the news this morning.

What's our country coming to?

In my 9 year olds school (Elementary), kids aren't allowed to even touch each other when on the playground (no flag football, etc..) due to the fear they might get hurt or hurt each other.

Hell, when I was in school, "Smear-the-Queer" was the game of Kings and there was nothing better than beating the shit out of your closest friends! :D

In my elementary school one of our playground toys was a big section of maple tree trunk, a couple of hammers and a milk jug full of nails. To the best of my knowledge no one was ever hurt with the exception of a bloody finger here and there.

Good point, Ranger Ranger Bill.

It is perhaps also example of the "protection" those institutions are providing. I'm sure every child in the school - and their parents - feel much safer because of the actions of the whole system there.

I was about to say this was retarded, until I read the news article and saw that it was in my own damn town...sad. I guess Ocala isn't the rural town it used to be.
