Shipping off to Ft. Benning next week
First off, hello to everyone on this board, and please forgive me if this is not the correct section to post this thread. Next week, I will be shipping off to Ft. Benning and begin my path to Ranger. It has been an amazing past few months since my enlistment back in May and I would personally like to thank every Ranger on this board for contributing the information that I hold as priceless and beneficial to my Military career.
As of now, my PT scores have gone up considerably. Back in August, my PT test scored as follows:
Pushups: 35
Situps: 30
2 mile run: 18:54 (not a great day)
1 mile run: 8:04
As of December 20th, 2006 my PT score:
Pushups: 90
Situps: 63
2 mile run: 16:20 (on the dot)
1 mile run: 7:08
While I understand my 2-mile leaves more to be desired, I'm confident that basic training will greatly improve my running time.
Once again, THANK YOU for everything you Rangers (and other Military service) have done not only for DEPS like me, but for your service to this country. I intend on posting a SITREP as the months go by, leading up to my goal of becoming a Ranger, and that is something I WILL accomplish.
God Bless,
- Rick

All right, Rick, you have had time to think a lot about your place in the world. In your earlier intro, I asked you to do some introspective reflection. Please tell us why you have decided to embark on becoming a member of the 75th Ranger Regiment. Please give us your answer in fewer than 250 words by midnight (EST) on Friday 5 January 2007.

Ranger Jim,
I have chosen to embark upon becoming a member of the 75th Ranger Regiment because I want to KNOW that I would be serving with the most elite group of warriors on this planet. I want to know that I can confidently trust each and every man in my unit with my life, as they can expect the same.
Ever since a child, I wanted to be in the pinnacle of the Infantry, and that’s the 75th Ranger Regiment. I want to serve in a unit with like-minded individuals, who just like me strive to be the best and to never quit any task no matter how taxing it may be: that unit is the 75th Ranger Regiment. Ranger school I feel is the true test of my mettle, measuring what kind of man I really am.
I want to become part of a legacy that has fascinated me for years. That legacy is the Rangers. The Ranger history leaves me in awe, as when I read veteran accounts of the scaling of Point Du Hoc I began to better understand the true fighting spirit of the Rangers.
Most importantly, I want to be in the 75th Ranger Regiment to serve and protect my country with a unit that plays a vital part in the War on Terror. I want to be a Ranger, and I WILL be, no matter what it takes. “With a tab or on a slabâ€

You get a go for the thoughts. 240 words. Just as I asked. Your run also meets the basic requirement. However, Rick, you need to realize that just good enough won't cut it. Bubba hit it on the head: Run, run, run when you begin OSUT. If you expect to make it through training, and earn a space in the 75th Ranger Regiment, you'll have to work harder. Never, never quit!

Ranger Jim, Ranger RRDTm3, and Ranger Rangerguru, I appreciate all of your advice. While I realize my run time does in fact suck, that won't discourage me from heading towards my goal of becoming a Ranger at full speed. From what I understand, and please correct me if I'm mistaken, but if you are able to run under a 7:30 1 mile, and perform a certain amount of pushups and situps you are able to get into Ability Group A in Basic. With 90 pushups and 68 situps (as of last night), and a 7:02 run (as of last night as well) I believe that qualifies me for Ability Group A. Recognizing that I have to work my ass off (and I will to stay in that ability group), I believe I will greatly improve my run time and get it to Ranger standards by the time I hit R.I.P. If my buddy was able to go from a 20:00 2 mile pre-basic to a 12:00 2 mile post-basic, I sure as hell can do that to.
As I have said in an earlier post, I'll be posting a SITREP of my long journey. Once again, thank you for the wealth of knowledge on this forum.

It sounds like you have the determination. I don't know how much running is done in basic anymore, but any time that you have to work on it, I would strongly advise doing so. Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress.

Best of luck to you with luck meaning preparedness meeting opportunity. You are getting the opportunity, the preparedness is up to you. Never, ever quit.

All right, Jersey boi, at least you know what has to be done. Enjoy yourself at Benning School for Boys. You will be amazed at what a small world you are entering.
Jim wanders off, amazed at what really fine young men want to serve in the Ranger Regiment -- but wouldn't ever want to admit it.

Kid, I think you'll be alright. Just make sure you push yourself in basic, don't get hurt, and don't eat too much.Cosmo wrote:Ranger Jim, Ranger RRDTm3, and Ranger Rangerguru, I appreciate all of your advice. Oh, and don't forget: Airborne school makes you weak. Make sure you do your pull-ups when there.
