Intro - Jarred

Post by FtBraggTACP »

I entered the Air Force at 17, my parents were getting transferred to Naples, Italy and I did not want to be stuck in idle doing nothing with my life but screwing around for that 3 year tour. The military was always my goal and dream, my father having been in the Navy for 23 years at the time, (spent his whole career on a sub) would only sign me into the AF. I had an assigned job as a "munitions systems" tech for the AF and went off to basic. Thinking long and hard about my chosen profession I had just signed 6 years of my life away for, I began to have second thought. I had always wanted to be a soldier not some bomb loading geek. About the 2 week of Basic I heard about how you could try-out to be a SERE instructor. I attend a briefing on the possibility of trying out seeing an escape rout from my current job. When the words "This is not a combat operational job" came out of the instructor's mouth I got up and left. As I walked back searching for my Flight aka Platoon an instructor pointed me in the direction of classroom where we were about to receive another briefing about "TACP" ??? I had never heard of this so I anxiously waited for maybe another way to escape my current assigned job. Not much longer went by when a huge guy walks in, with school badges, army patches and a black beret. He tells about this crazy AF job that lets you work with the army and call in air strikes hundreds of meters from your position. I got so excited I was falling out of my seat. I must have asked him a million questions that day. He gave us a date we had to show up to try out. He emphasized only 3 out of all the basic squadrons at the time would get a slot to the school. I showed up that morning ready to take first place. I can't really remember how many guys were there but it was quite a few. I took an ARMY PT test they did some more evals and he told me I won myself a shot at the school.
About three years have past and I am now currently stationed at MOD EDIT I have worked mainly with A co. and D co. Names Removed MOD EDIT have really taken care of me and got me in on some good training. I have 19 jumps, I have been through SERE (Air Force), CLS, and a few CQB and MOUT courses 3/325 setup, (very well ran, taught me a lot) June 14th my best friend and I were set to go to the 82nd's Pre-Ranger for our end goal being to get a slot down to Benning. I ended up on a last minute deployment to Iraq and MOD REMOVED NAME had to go without me. Sadly I got the news EDIT suffered a heat stroke while being there and is awaiting word on whether or not he needs a new liver. I plan on picking up where I left off when I get home in Feb. and attending Pre- Ranger. The school will not only give me great training but put me one step closer to my goal in becoming a RANGER BTN or SOF TACP.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve --
is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.'
