ROTC and Becoming a Ranger
ROTC and Becoming a Ranger
I suppose this is the correct board to post my question. I am 17 years old, and will be turning 18 on July 11. I am graduating this year from high school and I am enrolled in Penn State University. While attending I am doing Army ROTC. My primary reason for joining is service to country. I'm as patriotic as they come. Mostly everyone I know thinks I am crazy for joining up at a time like this and they are also surprised because they all say I'm a smart kid and should go be a doctor or a lawyer or some other professional. However, I am joining and down the road I want to be a Ranger. Is it possible to do four years of ROTC with a university and then upon graduation apply to ranger school. Or rather, apply to airborne school. You have to go through airborne school before ranger school right? And is there anything I can do to prepare for it now, other than physical training and getting mentally prepared.

First off, you need to report to the inprocessing section and introduce yourself to the board members. The Rangers who are on this board do not take someone breaking their rules lightly! So got post an intro, and then click on that nice little search button. It has years of knowledge and info on there.

From myself:
On that same note, I'd highly recommend that you, among many other things, read Leatherneck's "DEPS pay attention!- LN's Lesson I - Initiative" post.I must say that I've truly been surprised during these initial stages at the lack of initiative and overall unpreparedness that many who are pursuing such lofty goals seem to possess...it just befuddles me.
And finally, as a fellow kid with high military aspirations: STOP BEING A F-UP!
I had to go real quick last night so I thought I'd just ask my question and possibly get some feedback today. I just logged on again and introduced myself, then checked here. Didn't know it was that strict on a forum, but nevertheless I have introduced myself which I meant to do in the first place. Snafuracer the link you gave me doesn't work. I'll read more on what I'm looking for but I've been researching it a lot lately and can't find what I'm looking for. That's why I posted here.
I'd like to also add that I am extremely self-disciplined. I run cross country and finish the 3.1 mile race with an average time of around 18 minutes. So I can maintain less than 6 minutes per mile for several miles. I also do weight training etc. I guess nothing can truly prepare you for Ranger School though. It's a dream of mine and I'm gunning for it. I read some of the ROTC posts around, but I'm still a bit unsure. Since I will be a ROTC cadet I know I have no rank and am still this young unexperienced kid who thinks he's tough. But that isn't me. Butterbar or not I earn the respect of everyone I meet and give respect to those who deserve it. I don't think I'm better than anybody. I think in comparison to other kids about to enter the military I have a good deal of knowledge and understanding of what I'm getting myself into. I've done my homework. My uncle fought in Vietnam and I've learned much from him. But what I want is different. I want to be a Ranger. It's easier I guess to enlist and get the option 40 but I will be commissioned. Does anyone here know of somebody that did ROTC and went on to a ranger? And if so, what path did they take? Thanks.

Snafu's link does work, I just tried it. Here is the link without it's cover page. These are items you are supposed to find on your own. Make the search button your friend. Also, pay attention to detail. If you took the time to read FAQ's just coming onto a site and learning rules is a necessary item or chaos would rule. Saying you didn't know is no excuse.Kwith wrote:I had to go real quick last night so I thought I'd just ask my question and possibly get some feedback today. Snafu's link is here at "Board FAQ's, 2nd item down. http://www.armyranger.com/bb/viewforum.php?f=16
But take the time to read all FAQ's on this site. Especially at the head of each forum that has them (FAQ's).

Post only one question to a topic. The infor you are inquiring about has been discussed many times. You are not the 1st to come along asking this question. Use the search button, and research this board before you pose another question.Kwith wrote:I'd like to also add that I am extremely self-disciplined. The best way to get to Ranger School after doing ROTC is to get infantry, armor, FA, or corps of engineers. Although the Army has opened up the school to other branches. Don't sign anything unless you are aure you want it. I would give the PMS at your school a call, I'm sure he/she would gladly answer your questions. Most of all challenge yourself, don't take the easy way out. Whether that is to do ROTC or enlist you will have to decide for yourself. The Army needs great soldiers/leaders regardless of rank. Good luck to you.

Item # 4 pertains to you. I will conduct my own search on your past posts' and see how many times you have violated this item. Do you want to tell me how many before I look? Do you even know fuckface? If I find several you will become an elite member of the 1000 push up club. And each infraction after that will cost you 1000 push ups.

Ranger Steadfast-
I wasn't trying to offer advice on soldiering, just trying to give some input on my experiences in ROTC and the experiencies of those who graduated before me, and based on information that has been posted in various boards on this website (such as Ranger school being opened up to other branches). The only other advice/input I have posted in the past has pertained to ROTC. Didn't mean to overstep my boundaries. I'll knock out a set until I can't do anymore for fucking up and another one just because.

Well I did my research and found three other instances where you have overstepped your boundaries before and one time you disrespected a Ranger. In my book that is 2000 push ups, not until you get tired.
When Ranger Kilted Heathen tells you to do push ups, your comeback response isn't, "Beating my face Ranger KH." I thought this Ranger's name was Ranger Kilted Heathen. You haven't even earned that right to call Ranger Kilted Heathen by his initials. That is another example of disrespect towards a Ranger. That makes it 3000 push ups.
Is your hole getting deeper? Speak up, I can't hear you.
