At approximately 9:15pm on October 29th, 1992
a USAF Special Operations MH-60G Pave Hawk was flying across the Great Salt Lake towards an airfield at Dugway Proving Grounds. It was the middle of the night, there was a driving rainstorm, and the helo was flying very close to the surface when it impacted the causeway stretching to Antelope Island. The Blackhawk careened into the ten foot deep dark water and burst into flames.
Twelve of the thirteen special operators on the helo died in the crash.
They are US Army Rangers COL John Keneally, LTC Ken Stauss, 1SG Harvey Moore, Jr., SGT Blaine Mishak, SPC Jeremy Bird and US Air Force LTC Roland Peixotto, Jr., CPT Michael Nazionale, TSGT Mark Scholl, SSG Steven Kelley, SGT Philip Kesler, Sergeant Mark Lee and SrAMN Derek Hughes.
This year, the 20th anniversary of this tragedy we plan to Ride to Remember.
Danny (Doc) Cox, a medic at the time with the 1st Ranger Battalion is riding a bicycle from Luke Air Force Base (Phoenix) to Antelope Island, near Ogden Utah (see map below).
Here’s where you come in.
If you ride a motorcycle or a bicycle, we are rallying at 8:00 am at Timpanagos Harley, Linden Utah. This rally will accompany Doc Cox on the last 56 miles of the Ride to Remember. Cost to participate is $25, and you can register in advance (print and bring your receipt as proof of payment) or that morning (please bring exact amount). You will receive a GallantFew/Descendants of Sparta wristband to wear indicating your registration.
Following the Ride, at about 1:00pm there will be a memorial ceremony at the Antelope Island Special Operations Memorial. We hope to have some surviving family members participate. More details to follow soon about the memorial ceremony.
