New to this forum...
Hello everybody. First off, I'd like to say that I found this forum on accident. But after browsing around it for about an hour, I decided that I'd like to become a part of this community and learn a little something.
As for the "about me" that everybody is posting... I'm not currently in the military. I've been a dependent of my father all my life. (Military Brat pride!) I will be starting my freshman year of college on an Army ROTC scholarship. I look forward to the challenge, and I'll be giving all I've got to earn a slot to a school next summer, such as Airborne or Air Assault.
I guess that's about it for introductions.
Does anybody know where I can find a copy of the Ranger Handbook? (cheap college student)

Enlist with 11X/ABN/OPT40 and go to college if you still want to after your enlistment is up.EthosDucimus wrote:Selected an Avatar.
Can anybody offer any tips that will keep me on course in college? There are tons of distractions in college, and I want to stay true to my goals.
or
Don't borrow any money, pay your own way, and work 40 hours a week to pay for a full course load.
or
Find some folks with similar goals and hang out with them.
Seriously, if you are distracted from your goals, you either don't have a plan, or are not fully committed to achieving it.

It sure as shit did in 1991-92.V-Rod wrote:ROTC SUCKS!
The following entails posts I made on Glocktalk about ROTC:
And here was another post:I had the intention of going the ROTC route during college. As a prior-service guy, I was completely disgusted with the program, most of the cadidiots, and a few of the cadre. I got to skip the 1st 2 years of MilSci because of my prior service, and there were some of the 3rd year guys that had serious issues with LandNav and other subjects. The level of BS was much higher than anything I had been subjected to as a peon enlisted guy my first couple of years on active duty. I also got burnt out by being in the NG after active duty with an Airborne unit at Bragg.
It was pretty sad. Most of the cadet chain of command tried to be pretty hooah about stuff, despite the fact that they hadn't done anything yet, with perhaps jump school or something along those lines. There were several folks doing the Ranger Challenge thing, running around in Black berets (before Shinseki stole them from the Ranger Regiment) that were complete idiots.
We used to have to support the ROTC Advanced Camp at Bragg during the summers, and it was pretty entertaining.
I would try the enlisted route and go for OCS if I were you.
We had to do this FTX in ROTC that brings back memories.....
Not once in the 1 year I spent in ROTC did we ever fire blank ammunition.
We were supposed to have drawn weapons from the USAR component locally, and blank ammo for a FTX that was supposed to simulate Advanced Camp, where you have stations with certain expectations, etc.
We ended up with a bunch of rubber ducks, and when it came time to assault the "enemy" position, they made people holler "bang" "bang" as they ran up the hill with those things. It was a complete cluster, and since I had the role of PVT Snuffy for that mission, I just stood in the back during the AAR around the sand table. This worthless E7 was asking questions, etc. and decided to call on me "What was my assessment" or something like that. I said that so and so did this wrong, and that this one fire team didn't advance to cover the other fire team, etc., basically pointing out what was wrong, and how it should have been done.
I got reamed out for not being "positive". I knew right then that I wanted no part of this, and was certain that this organization wasn't creating leaders. It really ticked me off, because how are these people supposed to learn if its not hammered into them when they are practicing? I got my fanny chewed over how thats not what they want to hear in advanced camp, yadda, yadda, yadda.
I still think there is nothing funnier than watching a bunch of college kids wearing camo running up a hill shouting "bang bang".

It did in 1986 too. I put up with two and a half years before I realized how incredibly fucked up it was. And I went to a military college

During finals week my Junior year I packed my shit up in my car and fuckin bailed.
I liked enlisted life better than I ever woulda liked bein an O.
