WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department on Wednesday sued BP and eight other companies in the Gulf oil spill disaster in an effort to recover billions of dollars from the largest offshore spill in U.S. history.
The Obama administration's lawsuit asks that the companies be held liable without limitation under the Oil Pollution Act for all removal costs and damages caused by the oil spill, including damages to natural resources. The lawsuit also seeks civil penalties under the Clean Water Act.
"We intend to prove these violations caused or contributed to the massive oil spill," Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said at a news conference.

Having worked in shipping for 20 years, that is the least that is done to tankers which have or cause a spill. Third paty liability and oil polution insurance is a huge part of a ship owners life. I was wondering when they were going to sue! There are ship captains that spend years in jail and companies that go broke as a resul of oil polution. If BP and the others get away with this then it becomes a double standard greater than all. Anyway, spil protection and indemnity is covered by insurance companies. Oil companies pay on a monthly basis the premiums....the companies be held liable without limitation under the Oil Pollution Act for all removal costs and damages caused by the oil spill, including damages to natural resources
