Quitting

Post by NoahH »

I see a lot of people on and nobody posting so I thought I would ask a question I've been thinking about for a while....I think they did something like this over on SOCnet.

What was going through your mind when things really sucked? I mean, when other guys were quitting, what was it that made you keep going?

The guy in front of me. Or when I was in the front, the guy behind me.

I was gonna be last man standing. Period. Sure surprised me when those fuckers wouldn't quit. Just had to keep digging deeper, but I was gonna be the last one on my feet.

If they could do it, I could do it. Easy.

FIRST OF ALL

We have this Latin saying that goes "Sua Sponte" which means "Of Our Own Accord". Meaning we volunteered to be a Ranger. If at ANY point we express that we no longer want to be in the Rangers, they'll cut orders so fast you'll never know what hit cha and you'll be gone the very next day. Cause we don't want ANYBODY IN THE RANGERS THAT DON'T WANT TO BE THERE. PERIOD!

SECONDLY

IT APPEARS THAT YOU FEEL LIKE YOU MIGHT NEED SOME MOTIVATION IN CASE YOU GET WEAK AND START FEELING LIKE BECAUSE OTHER PEOPLE ARE QUITTING (AS YOU PUT IT) YOU MIGHT FEEL THE URGE TO QUIT ALSO.

To me you've already QUIT if you're even thinkin about it. If you go into a battle thinking that you're gonna lose, then you've already lost the fight. There's an old saying that goes "The Battle is won before the Fight ever begins".

If you're not sure this is for you, then maybe you should try another line of work or go RA, AR, NG.

BTW, What does the fact that other people are quitting have ANYTHING TO DO WITH YOU!?!

I agree with this. I didn't want anyone to know I was smoked. So I wouldn't show it.

Also when people are quitting it gives you motivation to continue. They looked so sorry that you didn't even want to be associated with them.

The guys who quit actually gave me fuel! Everytime someone dropped, it gave me twice the drive. My first thought was always, "Excellent! More oxygen for the rest of us!"

I'm still that way. My Paramedic class that I'm currently in started out with 24 or 28 students (I can't even remember). We're down to 10 now, and they are still dropping. I love it! That means I get more 1-on-1 instruction. That means the guys who are serious get more time to work on our skills. And, it has brought the ones who are left, together more as a team.

As Ranger BeadleBug stated, quitting should not even be a consideration. Don't even let it be a part of your vocabulary. It simply boils down to this....I WILL MAKE IT ALL THE WAY, OR DIE TRYING! PERIOD!

Quiting

Post by ChipOnShoulder »

Quit'in ain't in the Ranger Creed. Surrender is not a Ranger word. Guys that quit gave me more drive through ego. I wanted to be and still want to be the last man standing--- Or at least die while striving for that honor.
It still drives me to this day. I may not be the smartest guy, the most in shape, or was the highest ranking with the most schools but I was and still am a survivor. Guys that quit die a little bit inside. You can see it when they leave RIP or Batt. You can see it when they quit jobs overseas because it was not what they thought or they thought that they would be in charge. It is a "little death" that I know will haunt them for the rest of thier days and there is no need for that shit in my life. Failures happen and have happened to me. failures can be redeemed and made right later in life. Quiting can never be redeemed, not in this life and not afterward. I saw wunnabe's quit everyday. But the Rangers just didnt have that word in them nor the ability to say it. I can't imagine a worse humiliation, a worse tag against a man, a self destructive decision to anybody worth a shit than to QUIT. I think a man who quits something is a coward. He can talk shit, he can come up with every excuse in the book to justify his cowardess.....but it still is a large yellow stripe down his spine. Can you imagine ANYONE you want covering your back having quit when things get tough? Sounds harsh maybe but I saw male soldiers quit simple shit like Air Assault in day two because it was too demanding, some even quit jump school which is the biggest joke school in the book....because it was too demanding.
I did see people become Rangers, get their tabs and move on because they were burnt out....those men were definatly RANGERS....paid thier dues, never quit, never gave up.

I'm not the way I am because I was a Ranger - I was a Ranger because of the way I am.

It never crossed my mind to quit. I've always beleived that if someone else can do it, then so can I!!! No matter what, if there are two men still standing, it'll be me and someone else.

Ain't it funny though, how many people are willing to trade a 60 second rest break for a lifetime of shame? You meet these people all the time that say, "Well, I coulda been..." then some excuse on how the Army fucked 'em. Who wants to live like that?

Seems as though each of the SpecOps portions of the communities have their own motivations. Quiting where you are shouldn't be entering your mind, even as a topic for what kept everyone else going. I am positive in myself that there was no time before the time I was there that it entered my mind and even after I was there the thought of quiting didn't enter my mind, I was afraid at times of failing my partners and that drove me harder, but never quiting....

TAC-P's in training have a saying, at each mornings PT formation. The strong shall stand and the weak shall fall by the wayside!!! This would be the first thing you heard each morning as you started your morning run to the beach for PT.

Good times.....

Rangers and Veterans,

Thank you for taking the time to ansrew my question. Ranger Beadlebug, I haven't thought of quitting at all, the reason I asked this question was this.
I just finished two summer courses where we started with about 35-40 people in each class, and by the end of the semester, there were about 10 people who passed. I'm trying to compare my attitude towards doing something that sucks and watching people quit and still driving on, to what the Rangers think. I'm not comparing summer school to being a Ranger, just trying to get a better picture of the Ranger mentality.

That's cool, the bottomline is don't concern yourself with those who quit, I always looked at it like they were a cancer I didn't want to catch it and I made sure I sayed away from it. Like some of my fellow Rangers indicated, that people who quit only lit a fire underneath me that made me even more determined to make it. Although before I got to RIP I have to admit that I wasn't sure if I had what it took, when I got there I never ever thought about quitting. I got dogged but I never thought about saying I want out, or this ain't worth it, or act like I got injured and could not continue or any other lame reason that we've all seen or heard of that people pull to muster the courage to quit. I never wanted to hear that I was a NOGO or failed at anything the Army ever put in front of me.

Bottomline I didn't want to be around those who quit and didn't
concern myself with those who did. That might sound a little cold blooded, but that is the way that it is.

There is a different mentality that needs to develop when your in the Armed Forces, one which requires dedication, initiative, drive, and preserverance (being a little cocky never hurt neither), but a Warrior Spirit through and through.

Good luck stud, I hope we were able to help.
