Introduction

Post by Firemedic »

I spent 6 years in the Guard, as a medic with HHT 1/124th CAV (TXARNG) and B Co 161st ASMB (GAARNG). I deployed to Iraq for OIF I with 3d MEDCOM and supported MPs, FA, and CA units as a lead medic in an ambulance platoon in Umm Qusar and Camp Bucca. I ETS'd in 2004 to concentrate on my civilian career and to start a family. I enjoyed my time in the military, but feel like I didn't take advantage of all the opportunities that I could have. For instance, I am a leg. For the past ten years I've been employed with a fire department in the metro Atlanta area, and I work part time as a paramedic in a local ER. I am also a student in Jacksonville State's Emergency Management bachelor degree program.

Over the past few months I've thought about re-enlisting. I'm at the point in my civilian job that I'm getting close to being assigned to a staff position and I need to do something to stay in an operational role. Being a military medic is an awesome job, and the best place for a medic to be is in the field with his guys. I started my Guard career as a medic in a combat arms unit, but I deployed with a medical unit. I learned a lot during that deployment (much of which I still use today) but if I do come back in I think that I'd rather be back as medic supporting a combat arms unit. Georgia has several such units to choose from. I came across some sites that mentioned a LRS unit here in the state, but information is conflicting. I understand that you have some members that are or have served with this unit and I'd like to ask some questions of them. I've spent a little while lurking and have learned a tremendous amount already. I have a CAV background and understand their culture but IN is a whole new animal to me. I look forward to asking questions and learning more from you here.

The way I became a Ranger and have earned the small amount of success I have had in life has been mostly due to one quality - determination. Lefty.
