rgrokelley is right. Alexander the Great was leading his father's armies into battle when he was 16. Clearly he did okay. Up until the last couple of hundred years, 14 and 15 year olds were considered adults and they acted accordingly. The reason kids these days stay immature well into their 20's is because of the freakin' pampering that they get and the fact that they are sheltered from any danger or responsibility by their parents.

I have absolutely no problems with letting kids " roam " or take adventures on thier own. Staying inside the house and playing video games or watching t.v. is a for sure NO GO.

But seriously, letting your 16 year old daughter sail around the world alone !!!??? The ocean is a very unforgiving adversary, and teenagers must face dangers and risks, but the world's oceans ???? HELLO !!! ITS A FREAKING FRAKING OCEAN !!!! Not the nearby woods, creeks, and dirt roads within a few miles of home.

To each his own, but my teenage daughter is NOT going to be allowed to climb into a small boat, NO MATTER what equipment she might have, and sail around the world alone.

If a parent allows this, then why not allow your daughter to go to a well-known drug party with convicted felons, guys convicted of rape, and murders ? She is big enough to take care of herself and use good judgement, right ? Let her go to the drug party. It would include less risks than the world's oceans.

Anyways, it sounds like she is gonna be o.k...........after 70 or 80 thousand dollars of tax payer money is spent rescuing her from THE OCEAN.
