Pay or free............computer software
What is better: IE with norton
or
Mozilla with spybot/clamwin and AVG.
Some of you computer gurus let me know the pit falls of going free.

Ranger Caruthers,
I have been using Mozilla and AVG for a couple of years, on three computers. They are excellent. We had nothing but trouble with both IE and Norton, for years. Norton extends into way too many functions on your computer. IE is over rated and slow.
Mozzilla has tons of cool, free add ons, that are very useful. If you switch, leave IE installed, but get rid of Norton, you may have to have a tec. remove Norton, but it will be worth it. AVG is flawless, and works well. I have had no problems at all since the switch. The machines run faster on the net, with Mozzilla. Try them, you will never go back.
Thanks for your service to our country.

So, AVG detects and REMOVES the threats? Or just tells you ......problems.

AVG has scan settings that you can set to your preference. It will identify and remove threats. Their latest version is not free, the versions preceding it are all free. I have never used the pay versions. The free ones have always been adequate. AVG was recommended to me by a professional geek that hirers himself out by the hour. I haven't heard anything negative about AVG. I had two viruses get right past Norton. AVG updates everyday for free, as well.

Back in the day the Kids ran the gambit of BS websites that would infect the hell out of IE. Norton is a PIG on resources and their updates can be slow.
With Firefox, spybot SD, AVG and Adaware --6 computers have been problem free for years.

Re: Pay or free............computer software
Norton might as well just be another virus.
Mozilla is the tits, as recommended above, but keep the IE. A lot of sites and aps will function only or function best on IE so save it for the occasional (& usually important) usage. If you or your kids are in HS or university, Blackboard functions best, and usually only, in IE.
and remember always to perform the requisite rituals to appease the little gnomes that really run these evil little boxes civilisation has surrrended itself to. Human sacrifice will buy you days of trouble free web surfing and research paper production.

Re: Pay or free............computer software
I have to agree with going the Mozilla route. Seriously consider a Mac as your next computer purchase as there are very few viruses for the Mac as compared to a Windows based machine. Yes they cost a little more but the headaches that come with Windows machines make up for the added cost for me.

Re: Pay or free............computer software
I just went Mac and I ain't ever going back.
I still like Firefox for Mac better than Safari (Mac browser) but can't find how to set up my history dumps so mom or NOK can't see the porn links if it ever comes down to it. Safari is a damn close second though.
Iworks is $79, and office compatible, both ways I think. I'm still learning my way around this thing and it's stupidly intuitive and well written software, from a user perspective.
