S.C. governor says he was in Argentina

Post by Silverback »

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (CNN) -- South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford did not spend the last five days hiking the Appalachian Trail -- as his staff indicated -- but instead was in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he told The State newspaper.

Spotted returning from the trip at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia, Wednesday morning, the Republican governor told The State he had considered hiking the Appalachian Trail after his state's busy legislative season ended but instead decided differently.

"I wanted to do something exotic. It's a great city," Stanford said, referring to Buenos Aires.

His staff and family seemed to be in the dark about his whereabouts. Sanford also said no one else accompanied him on the trip, the paper reported.

Sanford stepped out of the public eye after a bruising session with the state Legislature.

The Republican governor and possible 2012 contender told the newspaper only that he took a drive along the coastline on his trip.

Sanford also said he hadn't planned to return until Thursday, but came back earlier after his chief of staff contacted him to say the story of his whereabouts was drawing widespread media attention.

I found myself thinking "why is this a story", but it's getting a little bizarre.

Here is the article that appeared in the Style section of the WashingtonPost this morning:

For the Gov, A Little 'Me Time'

By Wil Haygood
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, June 24, 2009

After all those weird stares, after he fought against stimulus money meant to help his fellow South Carolinians who've lost jobs at an astounding rate, after the blitzkrieg of complaints from Democrats, no one had to tell Gov. Mark Sanford to take a hike.

He did it on his own.

He pulled a Henry David Thoreau like it was nobody's business and trekked off into the woods. The Appalachian Trail, to be precise. For days he's been out there, apparently communing with nature somewhere between Georgia and North Carolina. The trail doesn't run through South Carolina.

He'd dropped his security detail like a bag of stale potato chips over at reelection headquarters. He'd told his press spokesman to keep it all on the hush-hush, and the spokesman clammed up like a Kremlin operative.

"It's not unusual for him to take a few days off to recharge his batteries," Joel Sawyer, the Republican governor's spokesman, finally explained yesterday.

To continue reading this masterpiece of unintended fiction.

Did you (or maybe someone else) recently call me a "Shit stirrer" when I made a similar comment?

Anyhow, This recent spat of revelations seems to favor the Demoncrats, thus...Is it way out there to think that maybe this is revenge for the scuttling of John Edwards?
