How to become a Ranger after OCS?

Post by juwu »

Dear SFC hit_it,

I am hoping you can provide some insight as to how I can get an opportunity at Airborne and Ranger Schools after graduating from OCS. I have recently enlisted under 09S and am currently schedule to ship out end of July, but am trying to push it back until September (my 2nd child is also due end of July). My top branching preference is infantry, however I recognize that where I end up is at the "needs of the Army". I have been told that those who finish top of their classes at Basic and OCS get first pick at open slots. I am not sure how accurate this is, but is there any help / advice you can offer as to how to increase my odds at getting my top branch preference?

Also, once I branch after OCS, do I have to apply for Airborne and Ranger Schools or am I selected based on other factors? Any information you can provide me on the process would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Carl

Carl,
Simple answer...your training opportunities will be delegated by your branch assignment. Based on time between your mandatory training (BOLC II, III) you may be able to get training opportunities by working with your Branch manager.

For many years, the basis of who gets what branch and what follow-on assignments/training is the class order of merit. If you get high academic and leadership grades, you'll get your first choice. If not, you may find yourself in a less desirable branch / assignment / training.

Jim,
The caveat being, "the distribution of quality" allows personnel in the bottom of the top 20% to being assigned to the less attractive branches.

Currently at OCS our OML runs straight down the list. We don't break it into thirds like ROTC and other commissioning sources. No doubt that will change sometime soon, but as of right now that is what you have to look forward to.

Here at OCS if you run fast and study hard you'll more than likely get the branch you want.

As it should be. My class had around 95 commissioned and got around 10-12 Infantry. We ran out of Infantry just as the Commandant's list was exhausted.
