1st Battalion Silver Dollar Salute/Retirement Gift Ideas

Post by tigercannon »

I am about to commission in May and the NCO that is giving my Silver Dollar Salute will be retiring within two months after the ceremony. His first unit was 1st Battalion before going into the 82nd and later First Group. I know he graduated Ranger School in '87 after spending a few years in as a junior enlisted. I wanted to do something special since the 75th was his first unit, but I'm not quite sure what I should do. Does Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for any ideas that you may have.

I got my NCO a silver dollar from the year he entered service.

He probably cashed it in for a few cold beers, but I like to think it was a nice touch...

This is an old and honored tradition. You have not yet earned that salute, so you need to pay for it. My OCS company First Sergeant was the NCOIC of Tower week when I went to BAC, and was amazed to find him as the First Soldier at 52d OCS Company. Eventually, he became the CSM of the Student Battalion at Benning. Yes, every one of us in the company dutifully went by the bank and got him a slilver dollar. Today, I would suggest that you get a 75th Ranger Regiment sterling silver coin as a substitute. Good sergeants are worth their weight in gold.
