Is anyone glad the economy has gone down hill? Seriously, I've been thinking about it, and I can now afford to buy some land around here just for the hell of it. Property used to be $100K/acre for rural land, and now it's down to $25K/acre; I even saw a dozen or so 2-3 acre parcels up in the north end of the county for $16K-21K. They're 30 miles from town, is the only thing that's kept me from checking it out.

I don't typically like to capitalize on someone's misfortune; but I'm making an exception with the property around here. I may not be able to build the house I want until I sell the one I have; but, I can scoop up some land for a good price.

I can't believe that it is SO hard to understand that the President, no President, spends money in this country! ONLY CONGRESS CAN SPEND MONEY! Slick Willy didn't spend money and Bush didn't spend money. The only money that the government can spend HAS to be approved by Congress, the President can only recommend.

Now, did the Republicans do a good job of helping spend it. Yes they did, but this bail out can be and should be laid at the feet of the people who introduced and protected the programs all these years. Now for the second time we are bailing out the mortgage industry because the Demos protected the programs that gave away houses to people who had not earned them and could not afford to pay for them, while the Executives of the industry were getting rich. There should be a number of execs and Congressmen and women who should be in prison along with the old CEOs of Enron and Worldcom! Any bets that that will ever happen???

Oh sorry, didn't mean to rant!

Actually I did. It is time that "We the People" do something about it!

Great example. Habitat for humanity; They sell you a house a ridiculously low interest rates, but your ass is gonna be swinging a hammer and slinging paint to fix it up with some sweat.

Someone else here suggested that those on the public dole get drug tested. Fucking a right. I'll be the one handing out the urine cups.

I don't know which state had it, but I remember reading somewhere of a welfare reform program that insisted that those without HS diploma or GED take classes and get it, at the risk of being cut off. They then had to get gainful employment.

I could go on and on..
------

No one has to tell me about the abuses to the system. I see it every single day. In the 80s the then Governor of the Peoples Republic of Connecticut legislated that alcoholism was a disease. We now have to take anyone with an altered mental status to the emergency room to ensure that they do not have life threatening low blood sugar and to offer them rehab. (This can be done on the street in 30 seconds..)

In reality, the result has been that my half of my nights are taken up transporting the same homeless people to the ER when they are too drunk to get into the shelter. They know that they will have a warm place to sleep, and get a sandwich when they leave (hospital policy). They then get literally thrown out when they won't leave, go to the 24 hour drug store next door and drink a bottle of Listerine (because it's 4 am and the only way they can get drunk for $1.50) They proceed to pass out in the parking lot, the cops find them, and we take them back to the hospital to repeat the process.

Because no one pays the bill, the taxpayers pay about 20% with you and me picking up the rest in higher insurance premiums and medical costs. Not to mention those that really need an ambulance can't get one at that time because we are dealing with this stupid shit.

We had one frequent flier die last year owing Yale-New Haven hospital 2.2 million in unpaid bills for ER visits while intoxicated.

Until the law changes I still have to pick 'em up and take them in.

I think so... but it's still a great idea. The same could easily be done with public housing.

I guess what I am trying to say is: I am all for volunteering my time and or resources but I volunteer it...not the government.

CSM, I think that is true with all those type projects. The ones Jimmy Carter built were destroyed in just a few years.

Newsweek is pure leftist crap. I do find humor in that liberals mention conservative values as if the mere mention of them has evil connotations.

Liberals are all about big gov, don't let 'em fool you. Liberals pretty much have everything ass backward-kill unborm children but don't kill 3 time convicated murderers, etc., etc.

Bubba, I know your ass didn't read an article that long, so how do you expect us to?????

But whatever happened to Republicans wanting less government and cutting spending. Every swinging dick that approved the 700 billion to subsidize banks should be fired. I don't care what party they are from. Having Obama's camp come out and say they want to redistribute wealth scares the shit out of me. I happen to be related to several burdens on society and they love this shit. Government cannot be the fixall when shit goes wrong. Michigan has been in a funk for years, some like to place all the blame on the auto industry and they were part of the problem. The problem lies in having to cover Detroit and subsidize every dirty fucking deal their government makes.

I'm not ready to strip naked, run down the street, sucking my thumb, wetting my pants and screaming the sky is falling but a line needs to be drawn.

My wife used to volunteer for them until she discovered that the people being given the house, not buying at a low price and interest rate, were not among the volunteers helping to build them.

I plan on volunteering w/ Habitat for Humanity next year. I want/need to learn how to build a house from the ground up, and that seems like a good way to do it.
