Poser Bill Jakob Busted

ST. LOUIS, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- A lawyer said a need to be seen as successful drove his client to impersonate a fearless federal narcotics agent in rural Missouri.

Attorney Joel Schwartz said his client, Bill Jakob, had some highly complex psychological issues that would require a "team of psychologists to unravel," but chalked his motivation up to a desire to indulge his ego, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said Tuesday.

Jakob pleaded guilty Monday to 23 felony counts stemming from his impersonation of a federal lawman sent to clean up the drug trade in the small town of Gerald.

Although he made a slew of arrests, Jakob's exploits resulted in a bigger slew of civil rights lawsuits against the town and the dismissal of the town's police chief and two of his officer.

"In reality, he just bamboozled a ton of people," said lawyer John Borbonus, who is representing Gerald in the federal lawsuits.

The Post-Dispatch said an investigation revealed that while in the National Guard, Jakob had passed himself off as an Army Ranger and forged a promotion to sergeant.
