Good afternoon Rangers,
I have read just about all the posts I could about getting a Ranger contract and the different ways to do so, but Im having trouble finding an answer that fits my situation. I have four months until I get back CONUS and I'll be ready to go into the Army. My problem is Im prior service so Opt 40 is out of the question and my recruiter keeps telling me the only way to do so is to go 11B and volunteer in AIT. Im told by the MEPs station that it would be easier to go 18X and I wouldnt have to wait too long for that. What I cant get them to see is I dont want 18X I want to be an Army Ranger. The advice given to many other people in this situation is to hold out for the contract that is best suits me. Given that I am in the AF I have a window where my Commander has very little to do with my future and if I were to hold out for a contract that window would close and I would have to wait until after another deployment. What would the Rangers suggest? Should I try my luck with 11B and hope they offer me RIP in AIT? Or should I hold out and see if a contract opens up? Thank you for your time and any advice offered.

Are you nearing your ETS in BigBlue or are you on this interservice transfer program?
Consider remaining in the AF and voluntering for one of the trades in the Special Tactics Squadrons, which have elements that support the Rangers, ditto TACP.
Being a Ranger these days is risky, perhaps the first risk you must take is volunteering for the Army on the chance that you might miss an early chance to volunteer for RIP.
At least make sure you get airborne.

Ranger K. Ingraham, I will be doing the interservice transfer. Staying in the AF is always another option, but Im confident that Im making the right decision and enlisting in the Army.
I understand, as much as an outsider can, that being a Ranger must be risky. I've thought about making the transfer in services for awhile and I've thought about trying out for Rangers just as long. Im very dedicated in my pursuit in becoming a Ranger. If everything goes as planned i'll be in the Army by Jan 09.
I've read on here that some people have been offered RIP at Airborne School, is that something to take a chance on or is it a rare occurance?
Im just trying to find some way to get a shot at becoming a Ranger. Thanks for your input, Ranger K. Ingraham.

From reading elsewhere on this site, I believe you should be able to volunteer from infantry AIT and/or jump school. There's a liason NCO from Regt there somewhere that you can make contact with & if the slots are open, you should be able to get one. That's the theory, anyway.
Since you're already in the military, you know the pitfalls. For one, if the assignments people already have you tagged for a unit due to deploy once your training is over, you may be stuck.
Now, whatever PT you're doing, it isn't enough.
Good luck, I hope you get your shot; if not, at least you'll get into the direct fight.
