Between RIP and Ranger School

Post by dkrr24 »

Hi, so I'm taking the Ranger path but there is one question that all my recruiters have failed to answer and I would like to know the answer before I make a mistake. My father is an ex-R.I. and when he was in he said that you were a batt boy until you became at least an NCO and then you were qualified to go to Ranger School but you could not go until you were an NCO. So basically he said I would be stuck after RIP for about a year or longer until I got promoted to an NCO and then head to Ranger School. My recruiter says I go to Ranger School directly after RIP and I don't have to wait to become an NCO. The problem is I do want to wait. I don't want such a rush. My father says do not join if that is how it is because it is too much information at once and is incredibly likely to fail and be sent to whatever job the Army wants. He says that is how special forces works. It is such a high drop out rate out of Airborne school that it's near impossible to graduate to become special forces. Does anybody know if I go to Ranger school straight out of RIP or do I wait at after RIP to become an NCO? I would rather wait and try my hardest to get a slot to get a winter tab, and if it was straight out of RIP it would most likely be summer. Any answers would be incredibly appreciated. Thanks

In short you should
1. Attend Basic combat training
2. Attend Advanced Individual Training
3. Attend Airborne School
4. Attend RIP
5. PCS from RTD to one of the battalions

Understood Silverback. When I meant by "stuck" I meant sent to one of the battalions. I'm not educated so much in the whole Ranger process so forgive me for any idiot responses I may give. Sorry for the newbie question but what exactly does PCS and RTD stand for? I'll make sure to "search" I have just yet to come across and answer. Thank you very much for your input.

Thank you for the reply wazzle. That is the answer I've been trying to look for and i'm sure you are credible for the answer but I would like to hear it from a Ranger just in case they have changed some sort of rule, or if my recruiter is completely lying.

You know, I saw this coming when I saw this same question on military.com.

RANGER Silverback ANSWERED your question, and you should show him the courtesy of adressing him properly on these boards.

Hopefully the DEP MOD will unfuck you before you post again.

Ranger Centermass, His name is Dan (Last name removed by Administrator OPSEC violation -dkrr PM Ranger centermass with the info), Was an Ranger Instructer in I believe 89'-90'. Missed going to Panama because he was promoted to train. And Ranger Charlie 51, no, not a poser and no need to lie about anything.
