COLOMBO: A suicide bomber on a motorbike blew himself up Monday outside a police complex in a town near the front lines of the civil war in Sri Lanka, killing 12 police officers and wounding 23 other people.
The blast on a crowded street in Vavuniya, 210 kilometers, or 130 miles, north of the capital, Colombo, was the latest in a string of recent suicide attacks that have been blamed on the Tamil Tiger rebels.
The government has accused the Tamil Tigers of stepping up such attacks as a desperate tactic to derail the escalating military offensive against the rebels' de facto state in the north.
Over the weekend, the Sri Lankan Air Force destroyed a Tamil Tiger base in the north, and 32 insurgents and 7 soldiers were killed in sporadic ground fighting over two days, the military said. A rebel spokesman, Rasiah Ilanthirayan, said the airstrikes on Saturday hit a civilian area, killing two people.
The suicide bombing in Vavuniya, just south of the front lines separating government territory from the rebel-controlled region, killed 12 police officers and wounded 19 police officers and 4 civilians, said Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara, a military spokesman.
