Intro
Hello Rangers,
My name is Jeff and I am 20 years old. I am currently taking a break from college (so I can try to decide on a major, if one at all), and have completed 54 credits at the University of Minnesota. Meanwhile, I am working two physically demanding jobs and trying to improve my PT scores.
I have been interested in joining the military long before I started high school, but it wasn’t until I read several books that I really became interested in the Rangers; the two that left the greatest impressions on me were A More Elite Soldier and The Road to Unafraid. It wasn’t until my twentieth birthday that I realized I really haven’t done much with my life- so I decided I would find my balls and contact a recruiter so I can get my Option 40 contract. Currently, I am thinking about a MOS of 11x or 68w. I have used the search function of this website and it has been very helpful, so now I have to decide.
Thank you Rangers for your service and letting me be a guest here.
Here are my PT scores (with plenty of room for improvement):
PU: 56
SU: 68
2 mile: 12:38

Your PU and SU scores need a little work and if your run time is accurate then that is good to go.
There is a ton of information on this site that will give you a good idea of what you need to do to improve. Once you have decided on your MOS, which I would recommend researching on here, let us know in this thread and we'll get you hooked up with a mentor - if you choose to subject yourself to a little extra work and show one of the Rangers here that you are serious about your goals.

Thank you Ranger Ranger Bill.
Quick update, I took the ASVAB today and scored a 91 with a gt of 125. My recruiter was really pumping Special Forces, which I won't lie, sounded good as do the Rangers. His thinking was just that since 18x popped up in the computer, it would be a better fit than 68w with an option 40. I know now that I want to go 68w, but will continue to research Special Forces to see if it seems to be as good a fit as my recruiter thinks it will be.
I will gladly take any advice from the Rangers of this board, but now I will STFU and keep researching.

If it were me, I would go Ranger initially, and as time passes, I would consider SF. Being a Ranger Medic is a major challenge, but ArmyRanger.com has a great bench of talented mentors who can guide you. Never, never quit!Minnesooootan wrote: My recruiter was really pumping Special Forces, which I won't lie, sounded good as do the Rangers. Thanks for your input Rangers! That was the direction I was thinking, as I had seen it mentioned several times throughout my research.
Ranger IDon'tCare, thanks for the offer! If the time comes where google fails me, I will be sure to take you up on your offer.
I will report back when my contract is finalized.

On this site, the odds are we will direct you towards your Option 40.Minnesooootan wrote:Thanks for your input Rangers! That was the direction I was thinking, as I had seen it mentioned several times throughout my research.

But the journey you take is yours and yours alone. If the SF pipeline sounds like something that interests you, then by all means persue it.
The perceived brass ring to you may not be the same for others so chase your dreams and if we can offer advice, we will.
What I will tell you is, the medics I served with were my heroes.
Good luck in your endeavors.

Rangers, I went to MEPS today to take the physical and I left with a 68W and Option 40 contract! I took the advice from this site and applied it to the best of my abilities. My ship date is 20080903. Time is short and I will use the most of it to make sure I am in peak physical condition. This slot will not be wasted!

I was just talking to my mentee about this kinda thing the other day..
With the college credits you have, and a max PT score (which is achievable by the end of AIT if you starting scores are accurate..) There is no reason you can't be a Tabbed Corporal (or SGT, if your lucky..) in the Regiment within 3 years. From there, the sky is the limit. The ride ends only when you want it to. (assuming you don't get hurt, of course..)
I can tell you from first hand experience, the Medics job in the Ranger Regiment is one of the toughest and most exclusive in the Army. You will work your ass off, but the reward is worth it. Trust me. Do that for 4 years, get your Tab and you will be well prepared for success in Special Forces, or any follow on job for that matter. Every single friend of mine who has taken this same route says it is a natural progression and loves it (even though you'll be pretty much locked into an 18D job).
Nothing left to do but go and get it.
