Earthquake hits Greece

Post by RangerX »

Authorities say a very strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 has struck south-western Greece.

Media reports said one person had been killed by the quake, in the area of Kato Ahaia, by a falling roof. Authorities have not immediately confirmed the death.

Reports also said there were at least seven injuries - six in the province of Ahaia and one on the island of Lefkada, where a person was struck by falling rocks on a beach.

All okay it was just a small shake as we where several hundred kilometers away. My brother in law's wife is from the next town over and her mother had cracks in the walls and lots of things broken but other than that all is okay.

So far two where found dead and 40 injured. I think that there are more than 40 or 50 homes destroyed. It wasn't a "China" but we do worry sometimes...

We are in one of the worlds largest quake zones so they are common. 1999 6 days after my son was born we had a 5.9 that killed 150 people 5 miles from our home.

The thing to know is that it's not the magnitued that counts but the depth.
Our 5.9 years ago was much worst than the 6.5 yesterday as it was 5 miles down and the 6.5 was more than 6 miles down.

So till now they have about 200 homes destroyed. But the hardest part is that last August this is the same area that was in the big fires. Last August most lost their crops and lively hood and now nature came in for the homes. So basically it sucks.

Other than that life goes on.
