I need to get in touch with my son. His grandfather passed away today. How do I go about this? Any help would be appreciated.

Contact the American Red Cross ASAP, they have procedures in place for this.
Sorry for your loss.

Sorry this is late - but contact the LOCAL Red Cross chapter where the grandfather was at - everything will have to be verified back through them. Have names of attending physician and hospital/location, funeral parlor and director plus phone numbers. Know your son's complete unit name, address and official phone number, if you can. His cell phone number isn't enough. If he is deployed, provide as much specific information as you know, but also include the rear detachment info.

The message goes from local Red Cross up to national (or international), down again to the local Red Cross wherever he's at, starting with the base where he is stationed.

Good luck, God bless and prayers are out.

One other thought:

If you have not personally contacted your son yet, and the Red Cross is doing official (first-time) notification, you can request a Chaplain or other person of faith to be present, however religious people do not do the notification themselves - they are there for comfort and support. The chain of command will provide notification.
