US scraps $20 million 'virtual' fence on Mexico border

Post by RTO »

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — The government is scrapping a $20 million prototype of its highly touted "virtual fence" on the Arizona-Mexico border because the system is failing to adequately alert border patrol agents to illegal crossings, officials said.

The move comes just two months after Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff announced his approval of the fence built by The Boeing Co. The fence consists of nine electronic surveillance towers along a 28-mile section of border southwest of Tucson.

Boeing is to replace the so-called Project 28 prototype with a series of towers equipped with communications systems, new cameras and new radar capability, officials said.

I could have saved them $20M and told them it wouldn't work....

What would work IMHO is a a series of towers equipped with
M60 machine guns and hundreds of thousands of rounds of 50cal. bullets.
Hell, they prolly wouldn't have to pay the guys to guard the towers. Most of them would volunteer to do it for free....

I think he might have been referring to your request for M-60 Machine Guns (7.62mm) and .50 Cal ammunition (not 7.62mm).

The ammo wouldn't fit, therefore you would be reduced to yelling bang bang.

That is a very valid point, as almost every border fence (probabbly all of them)
ever created has been used to keep people in, not out.
