Also the Supreme Court has upheld that taxation is a function of government. So while there are only statutes and not a formal law the discussion is moot due to legislation from the bench.

This discussion reminds me, I didn't file my taxes for 2003 and 2004 until I redeployed from Iraq in late 2005.

From what I was told and read off of the IRS' website, Uncle Sam doesn't care if you don't file your taxes as long as you don't owe him money. Of course, you won't know for sure whether or not you owe him money until you file your taxes, so there's a kind of chicken and egg thing going on as to whether or not you're breaking the law.

I don't necessarily like paying taxes but it's necessary for the services we expect. Maybe the tax code could be simplified or modified, but there is cost for running an entire nation.
A point that was brought up on the film, but I do not know if they are correct :

The Federal Highways System is financed by the Fuel Consumption Tax not Personal Income Tax. National Defense is financed by Corporate Tax not Personal Income Tax. The Personal Income Tax revenues go almost 100 percent towards the national deficit.

It is correct as far as Federal highways are concerned, as of now. I think it will change in the future because the gas tax does not raise enough revenue to pay for all the needs as well as all the "Pork" it has to pay for. It also pays for a lot of mass transit projects since they take traffic off the highways. (That's the theory anyway)

Interesting......BUT...

If this were true, why are democrats always trying to raise taxes. I have to believe it's because they get that money to spend on their pet projects.....

This is...true.

I just got an additional tax bill for LAST year which is $43,767.34 on top of an already paid amount of over $79,566.00. Granted, the Govt will win but I gotta tell you, my TOTAL disdain for the mindless bullshit MY GOVERNMENT does with money is deep and endless. Yes, the roads and the military, schools and other necessities but the PORK crap on top of necessities comes from both Republicans and Democrats. Neither has done a good job of handling my money, your money, anyones money. When I see that a man (Senator) who made 4 million last year in various ways pays only $1,796.15 in taxes....Im left wondering....what the fucking fuck did I do and what did HE do? And, it happens on both sides of the isle. There are no idiots up there...just thieves and pandering liars.

I know it may sound trite, but this is the very reason that i like Obama the best; By the time you get to the level of a US senator, you are bought and paid for many times over. You have a lot of favors to make up to people who got you there and keep you there. He is the most junior of the three, so he has the least pockets to fill.

Ranger, I believe the statute of limitations for money owed to you by the Govt. is two years. There is no statute of limitations for money that you owe the Govt, however.

Hello Rangers,

From what I have read and seen it's the filing and signing of the Form 1040 annually that reaffirms your obligation to pay Uncle Sam, similar to re-newing a contract; I filed electronically last year but had forgotten to mail in a copy with a signature. A few months later, I received a letter from the IRS that until I send the necessary paperwork back to them with a signature I am not able to file electronically.

It is the investments that he made that can be written off. Look at the concept of house ownership. You can write off any number of things on your taxes. No apply that to investments such as cattle herds etc etc where a person can claim enough that even though they make a profit they pay less tax on that profit.
