BAGHDAD (AP) — Britain froze plans Tuesday to withdraw about 1,500 soldiers this spring after the faltering effort to drive Shiite militias from Basra raised doubts whether the Iraqis are capable of maintaining security in oil-rich southern Iraq.
The British decision was announced in London one week before the top U.S. commander in Iraq appears before Congress to offer his recommendation on how fast America should draw down its own forces.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Monday in Copenhagen, Denmark that last week's violence in Shiite areas had not changed American plans to withdraw more combat forces by July.

And it’s a bit political too.
And it’s a bit long as I have the afternoon in the office without a class on.
And it’s about the UK’s forces in general.
This whole article is the result of decisions made thoroughly unqualified people who won’t listen to the subject matter experts.
The clown of Prime Minister currently in Downing Street opens his mouth and spews forth yet more shite!
Not content with stripping the Armed Forces to their lowest levels since the 1930’s,
He opens his port and makes nonsense commitments the UK’s forces aren’t able to keep (even if they wanted to)
Committing to pull troops before the job is done and rounds complete?
He was probably sick the day they were teaching about the inherent problems encountered during counter insurgency on his Basic and Advanced Prime Minister’s courses (the one where they teach you the f*ckers don’t do what you want them to do).
Oh wait that’s right….THERE ISN’T ONE!!!
That’s why any chimp can do it.
In his previous role as the Chancellor of the Exchequer (bloke in charge of the budget), he made no secret that he thinks the military is little more than over grown rugby club, and doesn’t deserve public money.
This is reflected in the fact that we currently have a part-time defence secretary, at a time when HM Forces haven’t seen as much nonsense since Korea.
And by the fact of the defence budget being successively slashed since his mob took power in 97.
He is the most blatantly anti-military PM my country has seen in many a year, his mob send out The Mob to do the dirty with inadequate kit and poor support.
And then has the audacity to get angry with the lads and the neighbours when things to don’t go according to his plans!!!
I am royally pissed off!
I keep hearing over and over that my friends have to keep begging for kit, ammo, fast air and even a lift into the FEBA from the US.
I AM NOT digging at anyone outside of the UK’s government on this, international co-operation and mutual defence was the basis for NATO, but my former bosses ensure that my old mob can’t keep their end of the bargain.
Certainly not without first asking the US to ensure air supremacy, close air support, logistic and medical support.
My country is (allegedly) a G-8 economic superpower; a very rich country, a centre of intellectual excellence based on cutting edge sciences, coupled with a massive industrial powerbase.
We shouldn’t have to ask anyone for rations or ammo.
And after almost seven years of constant combat, we still shouldn’t have to keep bumming lifts from our mates to the “partyâ€
