I went to the high school to conduct my self administered APFT and turns out tonight was the homecoming football game so needless to say the track was unavailable. I will conduct the test first thing in the morning.
A friend of mine who went through the Camden County, NJ. sheriffs academy told me once about a saying they had to memorize. (kinda like their "Ranger Creed"..) I printed it up and keep it as a reminder when my lazy-ass tries to rationalize my skill at procrastination. It Reads;

"Excuses are tools of the incompetent, building monuments of nothingness, and those who are skilled in their use are seldom capable of anything else."

Take this as you will..

Rangers, the results from this morning's self-APFT are as follows:

Pushups: 31
Situps: 38
2 Mile Run: 17:57

From this I realize how much I haven't been practicing PUs and SUs. My running has improved but I certaintly haven't given the others enough practice over the past few weeks.

You do realize you have TWO full minutes to complete pushups and situps, right?

You don't have to stop after only 45 seconds....

Rangers, it has been awhile since I first came to the site for advice and after several months of heeding said advice, I have begun my enlistment process. Yesterday I spent 4 hours at my recruiting station filling out the necessary paperwork to enlist. I report to MEPS Sunday afternoon and process Monday. I hope/expect to be shipping very soon after. Upon return from MEPS I will be sure to post a brief sitrep on how things went. Thank you to everyone for thier input to get me to this point, it means a lot to me.

RANGER513, that would be correct. It was a lot of PT, following Ranger The Sleepy Doc's diet advice, and keeping a commited attitude to making the change in order to reach my goals.

RANGER513, as of last week I was doing 61 sit ups, 48 push ups, and running a 16:09 2 mile. With OSUT coming up quickly I'm very concerned with my running ability. Though I'm not struggling to make it a full lap around the track without stopping like I once was, 16:09 isn't going to cut it. Running and cardio in general is my biggest focus in the gym right now.

Well wild man, I hate ( not really ) to put a damper on your motivation, but those scores are NOT going to cut it. In fact, not even close.

61 sit ups and 48 push ups in two minutes will NOT get you into R.I.P., a Ranger Battalion, perhaps not even Airborne School. 16:09 on a two mile run is a cake walk for new Rangers in Battalion.

Just being straight forward with ya. Our overall goal here is to prepare youngens like you for life in a Ranger Battalion. We are not going to blow smoke up your ass. Either you cut it, or your don't.

It might sound hard, cruel, whatever. But the enemy isn't going to cut ya any slack either.

Physical fitness is totality up to YOU. No one can do it for you.

Good luck.

Roger that RANGER513. I am fully aware that my scores are...even in my opinion...beyond piss poor. I am working to remedy this before OSUT (Though I'm sure my DS would LOVE to remedy it in his own way). With that being said I refuse to quit though this will be the biggest challenge of my life so far.

Don't judge yourself too harshly. Yes, your scores aren't going to get you a Master Fitness rating, but then you aren't going straight into the "Best Ranger" competition either.

This was October..

This is now..

That is a marked improvement. Yes, you cannot leave the temple yet, but you are heading in the right direction young grasshopper. If you haven't, get some graph paper and plot your PT scores starting with October. Keep it with you and mark down your score every month until such time that you get to Battalion.. (or your family says "what is this chart?" after your funeral). This will give you a visual indicator and hopefully motivate you even more.

Like I said before; patience. Rome wasn't built in a day. Continue to work out like before and you will get there. Just in the 6 months you have been here you have made significant gains. If you started OSUT with your Oct. scores you'd get eaten alive and wind up being posted some TMC in Fort Dingleberry, Nowhere... or worse, cutting grass at the Ft. Sam schoolhouse.

Now, you have a fighting chance, and your scores will only get better until you ship out. Remember, don't just focus on one area of fitness (cardio vs strength) Being fit means having good strength, good cardio endurance, and flexibility. Don't forget your stretching! You ever see "The Karate Kid"? In it there is a scene when Daniel-san is training. Mr. Miyagi is making him do kata standing on the end of a rowboat. He tells him. "Balance is key; when balance good, karate good, everthing good.." Keep working out, but balance your workout.

Keep it up and you will get there. If I had the chance to enlist again I would be in your shoes; Go active duty at 18 and work out religiously before going.

Good Job!

Damn man, that's a 3 mile time. Easily. We used to run the Horn and then Noble Hill in that time.

You need to stop making excuses as was stated before and really push yourself daily in your PT efforts. Don't rely on your Drill Sergeant to get you in shape, although he will be glad to help you, this is something you need to accomplish on your own.

Quit being a pussy and just do it.

One more thing and I'll shaddup...

I don't know what the standard is now, but when I was in the scores required were as follows:

PU-52
SU-62
RUN-14:52
6 PULL UP (no time limit)

Not for nothing, but you are closer than you think.. however

There should be no reason why at 18 you can't drop 1 minute every 2 weeks off your run time if you do it smartly.
