Introduction

Post by jmil »

Hello Rangers,

My name is Jessie, I'm 19, enrolled in a local community college, working a part-time job in the warehouse at Sears, and with what little spare time I have I try to stay in shape. I've been reading through this web site a lot lately as well as the book recommended by Leatherneck (To Be A US Army Ranger).

A lot of my friends enlisted either straight out of high school or shortly thereafter and just seeing how much they've changed inspires me to enlist myself. One actually just went to Korea last Wednesday, and another will have a short leave in a few months after graduating from Airborne. I look forward to hearing about his experiences and giving him a proper welcome home party.

Right now there are some family issues preventing me from enlisting as soon as I'd like to but lately the thought of being a Ranger is on my mind quite a bit. I would rather not post too much personal information on a public forum but I don't want anyone to think I am making excuses and will discuss my situation through PM if need be.

Thank you for your time Rangers.

Rangers,

I know I've already posted an introduction but a lot has changed since March and I'm finally making some progress.

As of now I'm 20 years old, working on the sales floor of Sears, and still enrolled in college.

As for the family issues, I've come to terms with everything and don't feel the need to hide the fact that my father was a drug addict and a thief who drained my family of all resources. He was in prison at the time I originally posted an introduction, and I was trying to help my mother take care of my little sister while she worked to support us and make up for lost time.

When my friend came home to do the hometown recruiting program he introduced me to a recruiter. I took the ASVAB, got a score of 93, and basically got myself set up to go when I could be sure my family issues were settled. I didn't know if my father would get out of prison and put my mother and sister in danger, and I also felt like I should stay to help them move out and get settled after all they had to endure. My mother is a strong woman but it took a toll on my 12 year old sister.

Upon enlisting my goal is to become a Medic in the 75th Ranger Regiment. It would give me a great sense of pride to provide medical care for my (soon to be) fellow soldiers.

I have read every bit of information I could get my hands on; To Be a US Army Ranger, The Coveted Black and Gold, and of course these forums. I am well aware of the requirements and process of becoming a Ranger (simply the technical aspects, I understand I will never truly know what it takes until I do it) and can't wait for this challenge.

Ranger Fishboy, I have been thinking about what you said since I read your post back in April.

"Never let your fears stand in the way of your dreams!"
It is time for me to be a man and follow through with my dreams. I know if I don't do this I'll be looking back on what I could have accomplished rather than what I did.

Today I visited my recruiter, filled out a bunch of paperwork, and let him know I was ready to go. I am bringing him my birth certificate, diploma and SS card tomorrow and he says he'll be able to get a contract for me later this week. Apparently contracts can now be secured over the internet so I can skip that part of MEPS.

I'll be going up to the Syracuse, NY MEPS on Tuesday to get it all in writing. I've never been more excited (or anxious) about anything.

Thank you Rangers for taking the time to provide a HUGE amount of information. I will post updates as soon as everything gets rolling.

Welcome and congratulations for manning up and wanting to become an Army Ranger. Let us know how things go with MEPS and if they do not offer you a contract that states Option 40, do not accept it, thank them for their time, go home, and tell them to call you when they have an Option 40 for you. In the meantime, read and heed the ROE PM I have sent you.

Be sure to listen to Ranger Bill. Do not sign unless you have the Option 40 in your contract. Good luck getting it and thank you for stepping up during this time in our lives.

Glad to see your making progress Jessie. As no one gave you the "DEP welcoming" earlier, PM inbound.

Thanks for the welcome Rangers and DEP Moderator (sorry, did I get that one right?).

If I've learned anything at all from these forums it's to absolutely, positively, get it in writing. Already the recruiter called me asking me if I would consider 18D if there were no 68W/Option 40 slots open. While I would be nothing but proud to go that route from what I have learned here it is always an option that is available after serving as a Ranger.

Enough talk, I'm going for a run, thanks again for the welcome.

Quick update:

I brought in some paperwork today and I'm meeting back up with my recruiter Thursday to get a contract ready for my Tuesday trip to MEPS. He said it recently changed and it's much easier to pull a contract ahead of time so that all I need to do is the physical part.

68w/Option 40 or nothing, 100%

I went running with a friend shipping out for Air Force basic and another friend last night. The other guy was pretty out of shape and we had to stop and wait for him after 1 mile, so I convinced my buddy to knock out a quick 50 pushups with me before we ran another. I've never been so motivated for anything, I'm even surprising myself right now.

HELL YES, one step closer. I just walked out of my recruiters office with a reservation for a 68w/Option 40 contract. I am going up to the Syracuse, NY MEPS Monday night and getting my physical done Tuesday.

I'll be heading to Fort Leanord Wood 20080717 which provides a lot of time to really kick my ass into shape. I'll have 32 college credits by then and I'll be working on the Pre-Basic task list to get E-3 before I ship.

Thanks again Rangers for providing so much information. When my recruiter called to reserve the contract the guy instantly asked if I would consider anything else. I told him I've been waiting for almost a year for this and would not settle for anything less, and 20 minutes later I walked out with a contract.
