ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Militants known as the Pakistani Taliban have extended their reach across all seven of the nuclear-armed country's frontier tribal regions and have infiltrated Peshawar, the provincial capital, heightening U.S. concerns that the insurgency is becoming a wider insurrection, officials said.
Fighting over the weekend spilled into previously peaceful parts of the tribal belt bordering Afghanistan. In Bannu, southwest of Peshawar, gunmen fleeing police took dozens of schoolchildren hostage for hours yesterday before tribal elders brokered a deal to get them safe passage.
"It's worsening day by day," said Sarfraz Khan, a political scientist at the University of Peshawar. U.S. officials fear the insurgency is becoming bolder and expanding fast, a State Department official said on condition of anonymity. - McClatchy Newspapers
