Introduction

Post by Want to be »

Hi, my name is Richard and I am 25 year old cable technician. I recently enlisted as an 11x with option 4 and I ship January 30th. It has been a goal of mine for several years to serve my country and I have decided that now is the time. My friends and family do not understand why I would take such a pay cut and risk to join the Army and that is fine. I am doing this for them even if they don't understand that.
When I started the process of enlisting I weighed in at 240 with the maximum weight of 188 allowed for my height of 5'10". Through dieting and hard work I lost 60 pounds in about 3 months. Unfortunately one of the draw backs to loosing that much weight so fast is that I also lost muscle mass as well and slowed down my metabolism so I find my self to be much weaker then I was at 240. Because of this I decided to get option 4 instead of option 40 so I could have more time to get back into fighting shape.
I consider The Army Rangers to be that best Soldiers on the planet and my goal is to make the 82nd or 101st and then fight for a chance at being a Ranger.
My current APFT:
45 correct push-ups
45 sit-ups (without someone holding my feet)
15:12 2-mile run
I recognized early on after the weight loss that with these numbers it would not be responsible of me to secure and waist an option 40 slot. My personal fitness goals that I will meet before I ship are 60 solid push-ups, 70 sit-ups, 14:30 2-mile run, 10 pull-ups, and the ability to maintain 5 miles at an 8 mile an hour pace.
I will post little and search often. Thank you for your service to this country and the information you provide on this forum.

Interesting perspective you've got Richard.
I've always thought it best to set your goals high and push yourself to attain them, but that's just me.
I also respect a self-aware man, just don't let that turn into an excuse for failure.
Good luck, and welcome to ArmyRanger.com

Want to be Airborne

Post by Steadfast »

Welcome to this site.

Nice avatar - looks amazingly like Ranger RTO.

I was the same as you and wanted to be Airborne. However, though we do have a policy that unless you have completed that particular training you can not use Airborne/Soldier (or the like) in your name. Since we are in holiday week I'll let you select a name you want in lieu of the name you are using. Send me a PM with the name you wish to use.

Good luck with the whole really fat thing.

Once it's off. Keep it off. Train your ass off. At every step of your career, Ask one of the NCO's (When the opportunity arises) how you can better improve your P.T. scores. It may not be fun at first, but there are some great NCO's out there who are willing to help you out. It's their job. Listen to them and follow whatever plan they give you. They will be more in touch with where you are at physically based on your actual performance.

What I'm telling you in a nutshell? Do this, and when you are close to finishing Airborne school, you can ask the Ranger Recruiter for a slot.

Just a thought.

Bravo57 gave you some sage advice.
Use the PT & recruiting forums here, there's some good advice on working out in there.
If you have the guts to lose weight the way you did, I'd bet you have the guts to beat yourself into shape for RIP, but it's good you're aware that this isn't an overnight process.

Good intro, make sure you come back & resurrect this thread after jump school to let us know you got a RIP slot after all.

Once at OSUT, you'll see lots of naysayers (including NCOs) & option 40s who drop their slot before even trying - they'll do everything possible to get you to join their sorry mob.
Don't let it happen.

Merry Christmas!
