Fat Burning and Carbs during workout

Post by SpeedyEJL »

Rangers,

For the fitness guys out there my question sums up to:

If trying to maximize fat burn should you eat carbs for energy during workouts?

The question tailored to my personal context goes as follows.

I've finally gotten under 20% body fat. I contracted in JUN 07 at 25% and was given until JAN 08 to make body fat, I'm at 19% now.

Basically I've been doing about 20minutes - 60minutes of cardio 5 times a week, in the morning if possible.

I've found I can push on a lot harder through workouts as time has progressed but I'm feeling completely wasted during the workouts, like on the verge of flopping while running, which I guess is good.

If I take stuff like Gu Fuel, Power Bar Gel, or just Gatorade to get some carbs/electrolytes in me I can push on a lot more. Is that going to kill my fat burn goals though?

Drink water and drive on. If you need energy, drink black coffee about a half hour before your work-out, drink water and drive on.

You try burning any more "body fat" like this an you are going to be contracting a dialysis machine..

Maximize fat burn by intaking less calories than you body will use.

If you are doing cardio, the engineer that drives the train is you target heart rate, not time. You can find calculators for this online here.

http://exercise.about.com/cs/fitnesstools/l/bl_THR.htm

Depending upon what your goal is, the range can be anywhere between 55% to 85%. Longer time at a lower percentage will burn more calories, short time high percentage increases cardio fitness; Think roadmarch vs. fartlek runs. If you are trying to push yourself through a run for less than 60 min. you should try to work on your cardio fitness. If you try and push too hard you are just breaking down muscle, which will clog your kidneys and fuck them up permanently.

In the end, having sex for 30 min burns about 350 to 400 calories, so get laid more..

Its a common misconception that you have to RUN to lose Fat. If you notice in the graph LOW intensity LONG duration is the best way to lose FAT.
Edit:
Your intensity (%VO2 max in this graph) is a huge factor in where your body will get its energy from. So if you can stay between 10-30% intensity you will be using more fats than carbs and you will lose the pounds you are trying to lose.
CHOs (carbs) are faster to break down fats take a little longer. So it would make sense that your body would use CHOs when sprinting and doing other HIGH intensity short-medium duration activities.
Your body knows to conserve the high energy (carbs) for a time when you need it. So When you are doing low intensity you are goin to use the slower energy source.
Yes there are a lot of other factors that go into this that are not included in the graph but I think this answers your question.

For us Ranger types its hard to see walking as a means of physical fitness, but if you want to lose weight this is the best way to do it.

If you have a dog walk that fucker into the ground. The weather is getting nicer out so take adavantage of it and go lose some fat.

Edit 2
It doesnt necesssarily have to be a walk but a slow jog, kind of like an airborne school run will let you burn more fat than CHOs.

As for the supplements you mentioned. A big part of those are sugars. If you need a booster and some motivation drink coffee (obviously the amount of sugar you use it might be the same) caffeine is an awesome supplement you can read about it in the Supplements-ergogenics thread.

Negative Ranger Tater Nuts,

The 19% figure I originally posted was valid in late September (intial APFT measured by Cadre) On 18 OCT I was probably around 18%. The 16% figure was from a midsemester APFT taken yesterday, measured by Cadre.

My goal is to get off as much body fat as possible by December to help out my run. I'm in the running for a January Airborne slot and would like to max every PT event to make sure I'm locked in for it.

I'm maxing everything but the run. It's plateaued at 14:00 no matter how much HIIT I do or distance stuff. I reckon its because I'm still dragging dead weight.

My personal tapings:

Water is good. But if you must eat..I'd say eat light.
Hard boiled egg, piece of wheat toast (dry) cup a joe(no sugar) and go for it.
