Top 100 books list
Moderator: Site Admin
Interesting. I've read 23 of those books and seen several of the movies. Years ago they used to advertise 'The Worlds Greatest books,' and you could start/build your library with 100 or more of the 'Greatest Books Ever Written'. All leather bound/gold guilded etc... and you got one new book every other month for 5 or so years. It had many of the same titles and many other great books.
Her's an eBay link I found to what I was refering to in my last post. These or the similar series from the Franklin Mint I think would be great for any for any collector. When I see the full series for a decent price I'll prolly snag a set.

Here is the Franklin (see my above post) top 100 book list. It is quite a bit different and has many more of the older 'classics'

Notably missing from that list....
Moby Dick by Melville
Anthem by Rand
Stranger in a Strange Land by Heinlein
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by Lewis
2001:A Space Odyssey by Clarke
Divine Comedy by Dante
Alice in Wonderland by Carroll
Illiad and Odyssey by Homer
and several more...
The Franklin Library list is a hell of a lot better, if you want literature....

No Charles Dickens or Mark Twain or Tolstoy? these people were on crack!!
Also very few books on this list deal with warfare. Interesting omissions like Clausewitz "On war" or even novels like "All quiet on the western front" or "The red badge of courage". How about "Watership Down"? That booked jacked me up as a kid and the animated film was wicked!
My Top 5 Classics
1. Animal Farm- Orwell
2. Oliver Twist- Dickens
3. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer- Twain
4. Heart of Darkness- Conrad
5. Farewell to arms- Hemmingway
Runners up- Clockwork Orange, War and Peace, For Whom the Bell Tolls and Atlas Shrugged.
Top 5 non smarmy, cool as shit books
1. My Commando Operations- Otto Skorzeny
2. Stuka Pilot- Hans Ulrich Rudel
3. SOG- John Plaster
4. The one that got away-Chris Ryan
5. 5 years to freedom- Nick Rowe
Runners up- The Element of Surprise, Battle of Mogadishu, Bravo 20, Hunting the Jackal and Chickenhawk

A good resource would be the Nortan Anthologies. They have section son the Masterpieces of Worl Literature 1 and 2. They are very comprehensive.
I would also add to the list Attacks by Irwin Rommel

PK asked....
And in case you never knew...the rock band 'Rush' was inspired and wrote the first side of the 2112 album from Anthem. (And yes, Rush is awesome!!)
Yes, I have read it, several times. It can be read in an afternoon.Have you read Anthem? I like Rand and never read that one.
