First visit with recruiter

Post by jmil »

SFC hit_it and Rangers,

I had my first visit with my local recruiter Tuesday morning. I took a practice ASVAB on which I scored a 68 and talked to him for a little bit about my reasons for wanting to enlist and my background.

He came to my house Wednesday morning and told me he understood I had some serious family issues that would prevent me from leaving until October and he had no problem waiting for me to enlist.

I got a call two hours later from him telling me I could fill out paperwork that day, and take the trip to MEPS Sunday to secure a 68w/Option 40 contract with a ship date in July. He said when the time came for me to ship he could negotiate a later ship date for October for a family emergency 100% no problem.

To be able to get the contract I want without much trouble is amazing but for him to push back my ship date seems more like a possibility rather than a guarantee. If I've learned anything from these forums it's to get it on paper and signed and I can only get a verbal promise which is not exactly a guarantee.

I have another meeting with him next week and I'm trying to find out if there's any truth in what he's telling me.

It is true that you can renegotiate your ship date. I don't know what your particular situation is, and I don't remember the regs, but I do know that it is not 100% guaranteed.............

I look at it like this:

Yes you could get the contract you want with a July ship date and think about a reno to push the ship date.

No, you may not always keep the MOS or the options.

BUT

It's no harm to you anyway. If for some reason something goes wrong with the RENO, you just don't ship.

He's the one that has to make up the DEP Loss.

I know it sounds fucked up, but if you can keep the contract and push the ship date back, then both of you will have gotten what you wanted.

If not, he's the one left holding the bag.

It's your enlistment, and although you only get one, you ain't in until you're IN.

I'm not on numbers anymore. Otherwise I wouldn't have said that.

Thank you for the advice Ranger Fishboy and SFC hit_it.

My recruiter was trying to get me to actually enlist this weekend rather than DEP in.

He told me the DEP was only for high school kids and again, I've learned from this site and others that anyone can join the DEP.

This guy is pressuring me hardcore to enlist without considering anything whatsoever and honestly if it weren't for these forums I probably would have been shipping out with some BS contract in a couple of months.

I have a meeting planned with him on Wednesday and will bring up the DEP again. If all else fails I will just wait until later this year to enlist.

I will discuss my actual situation in a PM if necessary to get a better idea of where I stand.

Dont let your recruiter pressure you into something your not ready for.
I waited nearly 10 months to enlist after my initial trip to MEPS and I still got what I was looking for.
