RE-Introduction
Hello Everyone,
Please allow me to re-introduce myself, much has happened during the period of my inactivity. Orginal Introduction
I joined the ArmyRanger.com forums late 2004. I have been inactive from the forums for about 12 months.
During my sophomore and junior years of highschool I was intent on joining the army right after highschool and enlisting in the 82nd Airborne Division. Because I only hold a green card I planned to stay in active duty for four years, earn my citizenship and pursue and Opt.40 contract after four years.
I am now a senior attending highschool. I plan to enlist in the Army Reserves while attending college. After I earn my undergraduate degree and citizenship I plan on enlisting active duty with an Opt.40 contract.
However their are complications:
My father died last year, leaving behind my mother, two brothers, and myself. My family has no relatives living in the United States, leaving me, as I will be 18yrs old soon, as the next person in line after my mother to take care of my brothers. My mother is very concerned that if something happens to her, I will be the only one left to take care of my brothers, but there is no way to do this if I where be called to duty while attending college.
My question is: If I where to be called to duty while attending college and something where to happen to my mother, would there be a way to come back from active duty and take care of my brothers until my second youngest brother turned 18?
Thank you,
Rangers DEPs and others,
Nate Matare

There are couple items you ask & tell us.
You failed to mention how old your brothers are but I surmise they are younger than you by a few years. If you enter active service and your Mom passes & you being their only living relative to be guardian I think you might be able to get a hardship discharge.
2nd) Once you enter the Reserves, you can no longer get an opt 40 with prior service (being in the reserves is prior service).

You're right about thie hardship discharge - I received one in 2001 so that I could try to adopt two of my younger siblings.Steadfast wrote:Welcome back ntg

Dakujem Ranger 42L5V
zabudol som uz davno hovorit po slovensky, 14 rokov
What would I need to obtain to get a slot into RIP with prior service? All I found was Popcorn and Beer.
I don't NEED money to pay for my college, but the extra money will help with books, family, personal... I believe that by enlisting now in the Reserves, I could be complicating things later down the road concerning RIP and/or MOS changes?

I am currently looking into entering reserves with a 95W contract. I plan to change my MOS after undergrad school to an 11B. Easier getting a slot for RIP?IS A PRIOR SERVICE APPLICANT ELIGIBLE FOR AN OPTION 40?
NO.
the regulation does not say this but guidance counselors can NOT write a prior service contract and include this option.
PRIOR SERVICE is defined as anyone who has served in a branch of the military, to include the Reserve components, and has been trained in a particular MOS.
Still trying to see if a split option soldier would be able to obtain an option 40. To be on the safe side, DO NOT JOIN THE RESERVE IF YOU WANT TO BE A RANGER.

PostMy personal recommendation is to NOT JOIN THE RESERVES if you want to go active down the line. You shuld just go active fromn the start.

Ok, now I don't ever pimp the program I work at (and nor will I ever), but this young man is in search of opportunities and there's a number of ways to get college paid for through reserve components while attending school and taking rotc. Should this be an option for you, you might look in to the SMP (simultaneous membership program). Put simply it means you pursue your degree, take rotc, attend drill, and upon graduation receive a commission in one of the 16 branches.
Students in the process of obtaining a commission in the Army enrolled in the SMP are reclassed to an MOS as a cadet and are non-deployable. The same is true of most National Guard units, or at least it's true here in Texas. You receive your drill pay at the rate of E-5 and when contracted you will also receive a monthly stipend from rotc.

Juniors-450$
Seniors-500$
If this is something you're interested in, PM me and I'll discuss it further with you. I know your dream is to get an Opt 40 contract, but you stated your concern about your family so I'm just throwing an option at you. There are many esteemed members of this site who served as Officers.

I'm afraid I've already looked at the ROTC course. Because I am not a citizen, I am a green card holder, I cannot attend ROTC; SecurityPut simply it means you pursue your degree, take rotc, attend drill, and upon graduation receive a commission in one of the 16 branches.
clearance issues again.

Not entirely true, I've got one student who went through that whole ordeal and currently I'm working with another. There are options. I'm not trying to push this at you, if you want to know more, PM me.NateTheGreat wrote:I'm afraid I've already looked at the ROTC course. Nate,
I myself am begining the SMP program in the fall and if availible to you, SMP is a valid option. While SMP, you will be non-deployable so you can be at home if need be. However, the contract voids and you can be deployed if you do not attend at least 12+ credit hours, so that is somthing else to think about. If you are genuinely interested, National Guard recruiters and ROTC scholarship officers can help you out.
