Introduction
Hello,
My name is Daniel, I am 21 and live in North Carolina. I am currently working as many things including, cancer patient caretaker, musician, and carpender. I wish to apologize for posting without fully reading and complying with the rules that you have set. None the less, I am looking forward to learning more about the Ranger life and the traing it takes to get where I want to be. I have the utmost respect for anyone in uniform, but especially for those who I look up to the most, the Rangers.

Sit-ups, push-ups, run times

Right now, my sit ups are at 47, my push ups are at 58, and my 2 mile is at 16:00. I am unfortuantly a smoker although I am athletic. Do you have any recommendations for me about how to improve these? Or any advice that you wish you had known before entering BCT? Thank you

You're a cancer patient caretaker and you smoke?
I'm not riding you - I smoked or chewed for 20 years. I smoked even while training for a marathon. I'm in the process of quitting again, with the patch this time. When you quit in basic - don't ever go back.
Your sit ups and run need drastic improvement. Right now you are doing the bare minimum standard to graduate basic training - and you'd better believe that Ranger standards are much higher. Since you only have two weeks, I'd recommend that you stay active - run and exercise every day. At this point, you won't improve significantly - but the better shape you are in, you will be able to stave off some of the stiffness and soreness that accompany the first week or two of training. You need to put for MAXIMUM effort in physical fitness while you're in training, even if working on it during your down time.
Heart counts for everyting, but you've got to have a baseline fitness level to exceed - which is where your goals have led you. Never, ever quit.

I realize that these figures are unsatisfactory, but I know that 16 weeks of BCT and AIT followed by 4 weeks of Airborne School will put my ass back where I was when I wrestled in HS. I have been reading so much on this site and have never been more inspired, determined and motivated to achieve what I have wanted for as long as I can remember. If there is any way that some of you could give any general advice or guidence it would be greatly appritiated. Don't count on your instructors/training to get you into shape for RIP. You must PT on your own during training to significantly improve your scores. Trust me on this, or RIP may hit you like a 2X4.torn8726 wrote:... Thank you Rangers for your replys and advice. I seem to have been some what misled by my recuiter on the topic of physical readiness, but I am glad to hear it first hand from people who know what they are talking about. Now it's time to put all of this advice to use and get in gear for some grueling preparation.

Airborne School is going to bring your run time DOWN, unless you're doing PT on your own, actually. Shuffling along at a blistering 6 MPH isn't going to improve your cardio.
