Shootin' Irons

Post by Scoty »

I went into one of my favorite gun stores the other day only to find out he is closing his doors after 20 years of excellent service to the community. Turns out, web dealers did him. I'm trying to talk him into joining that arena but that's another story.

After the sadness subsided I saw a few deals that caught my eye:

I've been after this M-14 Scout rifle for some time...it's on the the wall for $1100.

The other deal is an M-4 by Rock River Arms....priced at $950 out the door.

It seems like a no-brainer, but 5.56 is some cheap shootin'.

Anyone have an opinion of Rock River Arms?

Good guns. I have a pea shooter I built with a Stag lower and an RRA upper and barrel, it shoots under 1/2" zero groups at 25 yards. Apparently RRA is the choice of the DEA. For 5.56 prices check here.

Ranger Scoty, I wouldn't shoot the Wolf ammo unless it was a dire emergency. That stuff has some kind of laquer coating on it that will literally glue the case in the chamber during extended firing sessions when significantly hot. No amount of yanking on the charging handle will unfuck your weapon at that point. Nothing short of a nice, long brass rod and a hammer will work.

Wolf ammo is likely NOT the ammo of choice for anything other than AK's.

That being said, I had to do a trainup for a contract where the ammo that was used was Wolf. I put at somewhere between 2000-3000 rounds thru my issued M4, which was a Bushmaster. Never a hiccup or problem with the rifle or ammo with very little cleaning.

However the was considerable difference in accuracy between Wolf and other types of 556 ammo I have used in the past.

$950 for an AR is WAAAY too much IMHO. There easy to build yourself (you can even buy complete uppers to take the hard part out of it) or you can find one for a couple hundred less then that.

I heard all the horrors stories about wolf and never used it until a buddy of mine said he shoots it out of all his repeaters with no problems. I've since bought plenty and haven't had a problem myself.

Dude that's about average for a good no frills AR. I don't know how anybody can make a decent profit for much less than that.

My buddy just came back from the range, and now he swears never to use the Wolf ammo. His AR is completly fucked up right now, but his means of "justifying" t he ammo was "it was really really cheap!

Can't possibly be that cheap.

A couple of bucks and a barrel for a box? No thanks!

I agree most of my builds are in the 550-600 range and they have been awesome shooters and built the way I want them.

its really easy and you can save a ton of money.

I shoot wolf, never had a problem although it is dirty.
