Securing an OPT 40 ?

Post by Neutron »

SFC Hit_It,

I'm a DEP, signed on as an 11x with an ABN contract. I went to MEPS in Boise, ID, sometime in OCT '03. I tried to get an OPT 40, but they said they weren't filling any RIP classes. I was told that when I came back for MEPS again when I shipped, I would be able to renegotiate my contract and if there were RIP classes being loaded, that I'd have a chance to get one. My question is: have you seen any OPT 40's handed out? And if so, what would be my best bet in securing one in my contract?

Thanks!

Neutron i enlisted in october as well. i searched for my past articles where i have posted about my recruitment process but i couldnt find them so here it goes. when i went to meps and went back to get a job they said i could have opt. 40 and be a chemicle weapons specialist. i didnt want to be a chemicle weapons specialist, and they said they didnt have any infantry with opt. 40 anyways i took inf airborne with 18x. i had my recruiter call down to MEPS every wensday for two months finally a slot opened up and i took it! i am now infantry airborne with opt. 40 :D my suggestion to you would be to have your recruiter call down every week until you ship, cant hurt.

here's news to both of you guys. i just recieved the enlistment incentive for the next recruiting calendar month.

11X WITH OPTION 40 IS AVAILABLE WITH A BONUS!!!

Neutron: you have a choice here. you can either try and reno you contract to include option 40 or stay with the one you have and volunteer for RIP during Airborne Training.

BE advised that renoing your contract is 50/50. if Option 40 is available you may get it. if not, you may lose the Airborne option you DO have.

personal opinion, wait for the beginning of the quarter, go down and reno. if OPT 40 is not there, you will have a greater chance of keeping 11X w/ ABN.

remember it's a numbers game with Recruiting. ensure you get the best bbang for your buck.

ANOTHER TIP: trying to get the best contract is done with timing as well as qualifications. going to MEPS at the BEGINNING of the month usually increases your chances of obtaining choice contracts like 11XOP40, 11XABN, 18X, 13FOP40, 13FABN. that's nothing official just something i've noticed over almost 2 years doing this job.

i just noticed this. i have written one OPT 40 contract myself. he posted here until he shipped.

SNUFFER19 was my DEP. he is now at Benning in the Pipeline. hope to see him spit out the other side as a Ranger as he gave up law school for this.

the best bet is as i mentioned above as well as scoring the BEST YOU CAN on the Asvab. you can't even say the words "Ranger contract" to a guidance counselor unless you score above a 50 and posses the credentials to be counted as a high school graduate. i'll post examples of these credentials sometime this week.

SFC Hit_it,

Thanks for your input. An OPT 40 is only padding to my contract, from what I understand, if you're squared away enough, and really want to go to RIP, you can volunteer for it at basic and hopefully get accepted. But I want it written in my contract, as well as ABN. I'll call my recruiter tommorow and have him see whats going on.

Thanks!
