Well Ranger, I set off from high school a 400lb, 18 year old wünderkid in academics for college. My parents never encouraged or even brought up the military as an option despite a great great uncle (Army, 1st ID, BGen Operation Torch), two grandfathers (Navy and Army 82nd ABN), two uncles (Air Force and USMC) and my old man (USCG) serving. At college I started hitting the weights, the track, and the cardio machine, dropped down to about 250lbs. I found a great group of friends that I did not have in high school but soon I got bored with the Thursday-Sunday party scene.
I questioned if there was more than that and joined the Guard and went through BCT/AIT the summer after my Freshmen year. Almost all of my original group of friends stopped hanging around with me but I found friends in the Guard and some of them were in ROTC also so I gave that the old college try. I drilled on weekends for a while before coming to the 1-2-5- with an RSB Company (National Guard program where ARNG DEPers drill pre-BCT and learn D&C, patrolling, how to wear a uniform....kind of...etc) but found ROTC really lackluster, often questioning if we really got an Officer commission for doing so little work (a 3 hour class on Tuesdays, a 3 hour lab on Thursdays, PT M/W/F mornings at 0600 for an hour and an occasional FTX on the weekends...maybe twice a semester).
I suppose I'm stuck because when I go to Drill, we actually get shit done and I would love to be doing that stuff all day everyday instead of 2 days a month. People tell me not to pass up being an Officer but I just don't see why to do it besides the pay/responsibility change. I have a lot of fun at Drill as an enlisted guy and at ROTC we do almost nothing (and I'm not even contracted! I could be getting something like $800 more a month to do ROTC and ARNG).

So that's my tale Rangers. Sorry for the long-windedness.

I tried to format that post so it wasn't a huge blob but it didn't seem to take...sorry.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

good job stud. maybe you should go active, and then later deturnine if being an Officer is for you. there is plenty of time to make the decision, but make sure it's what you want, and for the right reasons. welcome here.

Here's a little treat for you Rangers...the weight says 270 which is a total lie, haha. I used to be in such denial about my weight. I'd wheeze something terrible after a flight of stairs and just cough to cover the wheezing and tell people I had a cold...heh.
